After 37 Years, Unidentified Woman is Identified Using Genealogy Technology

Sylvester, GA (January 31, 2023) – A woman who remained unidentified for 37 years has been identified as Mary Anga Cowan, missing out of Seminole County, FL. On Friday, May 14, 1985, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI assist with an investigation into the discovery of a woman who had been found injured and unconscious by passersby on the west side of GA Highway 91 north of Newton, GA. The woman was taken to the hospital in Albany, GA, where she died from her injuries on Saturday, June 1, 1985. The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office findings were the manner of death was undetermined and the cause of death was subdural hematoma secondary to blunt force trauma to the head.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta involving MARTA PD

Atlanta, GA (January 31, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, GA. The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on January 30, 2023. One man was shot and one MARTA PD officer was injured during the incident.

Warner Robins, GA (January 31, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Warner Robins, GA. The Warner Robins Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on January 31, 2023. One man was shot. No officers were injured during the incident.

GBI Charges Clayton County Chairman’s Secretary with False Statements

The GBI has charged Katrina Holloway, age 52, with false statements and false report of a crime after a criminal investigation revealed evidence that Clayton County Chairman Jeff Turner’s secretary (Holloway) mailed Turner a threatening letter. 

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in East Dublin

East Dublin, GA (January 30, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in East Dublin, GA. The East Dublin Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on January 30, 2023. One man was shot and one East Dublin Police Department officer was shot. Both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Being sworn to uphold the law comes with great responsibility. Law enforcement officers operating outside the law must be held accountable for their actions. GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting Following Multi-Agency Operation at Site of Future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center

Atlanta, GA (January 25, 2023) - We are aware that DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston has recused herself from the January 18, 2023 officer involved shooting (OIS) case involving Manuel Esteban Paez Teran and a Georgia State Patrol trooper.  A special prosecutor will be assigned by the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council to review our findings related to this case.  In the past decade, the GBI has investigated numerous OIS cases for local and state law enforcement.  Our track record of impartiality precedes this January 18 incident.  The GBI and Georgia State Patrol are two separate agencies.  As in every officer involved shooting investigation, our procedure is to gather information concerning OIS events and turn the investigative file over to the prosecutor in the jurisdiction the event occurred for their review and action.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Sugar Valley

Sugar Valley, Gordon County, GA (January 24, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Sugar Valley, GA. The Gordon County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on January 24, 2023. One man was shot and killed. No officers were injured during the incident.

GBI Makes Arrests in Atkinson County Armed Robbery Investigation

UPDATE:

Pearson, GA (January 23, 2023) – Roderick Hillman, 18, of Douglas, was arrested in Alma, GA, by the GBI, with the assistance of the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office and the Alma Police Department. Hillman had been charged in June 2022 with Armed Robbery related to home invasions that had occurred in Atkinson County. Hillman was also wanted on unrelated warrants in Douglas, GA, and Sanford, FL. Hillman was taken to the Coffee County Jail.

The GBI had also previously arrested Isaiah Wright, 18, of Douglas, for Armed Robbery related to the same incidents, in addition to Ashley Hamilton and Mica’enya Jordan.

Pearson, GA (June 17, 2022) – The GBI has arrested and charged Ashton Hamilton, 18, of Pearson, GA, with Armed Robbery and Mica’enya Jordan, 19, of Douglas, GA, with Criminal Attempt to Commit Armed Robbery. Roderick Hillman, 17, of Douglas, GA, was also charged with Armed Robbery and is wanted. On Tuesday, June 14, 2022, the Pearson Police Department requested the GBI investigate numerous armed robberies that had occurred over the course of at least a month.

Doraville, GA (January 19, 2023) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Doraville, GA. The Doraville Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on January 19, 2023. One man was shot and has sustained injuries. No officers were injured during the incident.
