Douglasville, GA (April 18, 2021) – On Sunday, April 18, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Douglasville Police Department (DPD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Newnan, GA (April 18, 2021) – On Sunday, April 18, 2021, at approximately 2:55 P.M., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 12:58 A.M., Newnan Police Department officers were flagged down by a victim at the Racetrac gas station located at 1 Amlajack Blvd, Newnan, GA. Officers learned that a man, later identified as Mario Paul Clarke, 26 years of age, was driving away with the victim’s silver 2015 Chrysler 200.
Officers began pursuing the vehicle out of the RaceTrac parking lot, and a vehicle pursuit ensued on Interstate 85 northbound. Clarke came to a stop near mile marker 48, at which time Clarke got out of the vehicle and ran into a wooded area toward PetSmart. Officers and deputies began searching for Clarke with no contact. Felony arrest warrants were taken on Clarke for theft by taking, obstruction, and fleeing and attempting to elude.
Update - April 16, 2021:
Greensboro, GA (April 16, 2021) – On Saturday, April 10, 2021, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI obtained arrest warrants for Deron Demond Bell, age 20, of Norcross, Georgia. The GBI, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Marshals Service have been actively looking for Bell in connection with the murder of Joseph Lee Briggs, Jr. on I-20 on April 9th.
Anyone with information about Bell’s whereabouts is asked to call the Greene County Sheriff’s Office at 706-453-3551 or the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Milledgeville, Georgia at 478-445-4173. Greensboro, GA (April 12, 2021) – On Friday, April 9, 2021, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the GBI was requested by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a death investigation. At approximately 6:45 a.m., the Greene County Sheriff’s Office 911 Center received a 911 call about a wreck at mile marker 132 on I-20 in Greensboro, Georgia. Deputies responded to the area and upon arrival, they discovered Joseph Lee Briggs, Jr, age 30, of Manning, South Carolina was deceased and had suffered what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds.
On April 3, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Savannah Police Department to investigate the in-custody death of William Harvey, age 60.
The investigation indicates that Harvey was being questioned in an aggravated assault investigation. Officers stepped out of the interview room and returned to find Harvey unconscious with injuries to his neck caused by a pair of Harvey’s shoelaces. Officers attempted life saving measures; however, Harvey died as a result of his injuries.
The GBI Medical Examiner has provided a preliminary cause & manner of death as suicide by hanging.
The GBI investigation remains active and ongoing. Once it is complete, it will be provided to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney for review
On April 15, 2021, the GBI arrested former Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Norton Davis, 35, of Colbert, and charged him with two counts of Aggravated Assault. Davis turned himself into the Clarke County Jail without incident.
On April 12, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting. The investigation indicated that Oglethorpe County Sheriff’s Deputy Davis attempted to stop Patrouski Hodges, 27, of Athens, for speeding on U.S. Hwy 78 in Oglethorpe County. Hodges eventually pulled over on U.S. Hwy 78 in Clarke County.
Crawford County, GA (April 14, 2021) – On Wednesday, April 14, 2021, the GBI arrested Dennis Ballard, 47, of Crawford County and charged him with Aggravated Assault and Violation of Oath of Office. Ballard is an investigator with the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and had been on administrative leave during a use of force investigation conducted by the GBI. Ballard was booked into the Crawford County Jail.
On Friday, March 19, 2021, the GBI was requested by Crawford County Sheriff Lewis Walker to conduct a use of force investigation on an incident involving Ballard, assigned to work narcotics, that occurred on Tuesday, March 16, 2021. The preliminary investigation reveals that on March 16, 2021, Ballard observed what he believed to be a hand to hand drug transaction in a motel parking lot in Crawford County.
Quitman, GA (April 14, 2021) – On Monday, April 12, 2021, a Brooks County Grand Jury indicted Will Cope, age 44, of Quitman, GA, for rape, incest, and child molestation. Cope was an Investigator with the Brooks County Sheriff’s Office at the time of his indictment and subsequent arrest. Cope was booked into the Brooks County Jail and has since resigned.
April 13th Update:
Both Officer Chase Gordy & Sergeant Rob Holloway remain in the hospital. Officer Gordy is expected to be released from the hospital today.
Aaron Jajuan Shelton & Pier Alexander Shelton are cousins (not brothers).
An autopsy for Pier Shelton will be performed by a GBI Medical Examiner. The autopsy has not been scheduled yet.
Agents are still working to confirm which Shelton was in the passenger seat shooting at officers. The rifle used was an AK47.
April 12, 2021 Update:
Aaron Jajuan Shelton, age 22, of Birmingham, AL has been charged with 5 counts of aggravated assault and 3 counts of aggravated battery. He is being held at the Carroll County Jail.
The deceased has been identified as Pier Alexander Shelton, age 28, of Birmingham, AL.
Carrollton, GA (April 12, 2021) – On Monday, April 12, 2021, at approximately 5:00 A.M., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Carrollton Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:34 A.M., a Georgia State Patrol Trooper initiated a traffic stop on a 2015 Nissan Sentra for speeding at mile marker 10 eastbound on Interstate 20 in Bremen, Georgia. As the trooper approached the rear of the Nissan Sentra, the driver sped off. The trooper engaged in a vehicle pursuit and was able to perform a precision immobilizing technique (PIT) to stop the Nissan Sentra. The driver of the vehicle was able to gain control and proceed. The trooper attempted to initiate a second PIT maneuver when the passenger of the Nissan Sentra leaned out of the front passenger window and began firing at the trooper with a rifle. The trooper’s patrol car was struck and disabled.
Decatur, GA (April 13, 2021) – On Monday, April 12, 2021, the GBI was requested by the DeKalb County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Dahlonega, GA (April 9, 2021) – On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, the GBI and Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jeffrey Wayne Burns, 46, of Dahlonega, GA, and charged him with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Homicide by Vehicle. The arrest was in connection to the death of Cheynne Jean Burns, 24, also of Dahlonega. Burns was booked into the Lumpkin County Detention Center.
