GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (March 8, 2021) - The man involved in this OIS with the Georgia State Patrol has been identified as Leroy Snead, 67. Snead died of his injuries on Sunday, February 28, 2021. Snead was from Alabama, but homeless at the time of the incident.

ORIGINAL RELEASE:

Atlanta, GA (February 27, 2021)  - On Saturday, February 27, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 4:22 p.m., an off duty GSP trooper was getting gas at the BP gas station located at 448 Boulevard SE, Atlanta, GA.  While at the station, a man chased another man into the gas station. The off duty trooper followed the men into the store.  Witnesses report that one man was armed with a knife and was attempting to stab the other man.  The trooper gave commands for the man to drop the knife.  The trooper left the store, and the man with the knife followed him.  The man advanced towards the trooper with the knife, as the trooper backed away.  The man continued to move towards the trooper and failed to comply with commands to drop the knife.  The trooper fired his gun, striking the man.

5. Aggravated Assault (2 counts for 2 occupants inside house they attempted to shoot their way into)

6. Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon

7. Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime

On Saturday, February 27, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting. 

Preliminary information indicates that a Seminole County deputy was attempting to conduct a traffic stop on two suspects, one later identified as Troy Arthur Phillips, driving in a white 2500 Chevrolet pickup truck with a Florida tag for reckless driving.  The men refused to stop and a chase ensued.  A second deputy joined the pursuit and the suspects began to fire a weapon from the truck in the direction of Seminole County deputies.  Seminole County deputies returned fire.

GBI Arrests a Monroe, GA Man on Child Molestation Charges

Athens, GA (March 2, 2021) – On Monday, March 1, 2021, the GBI arrested Obadiah Lindsey, 26, of Monroe, on two counts of child molestation.

On Monday, February 22, 2021, the GBI Athens Office was contacted by the GBI Americus Office and notified that information had been discovered during a separate investigation that indicated that Lindsey had been having sexual contact with a juvenile in Athens-Clarke County.

GBI Investigates Cherokee County Officer Involved Shooting

Ball Ground, GA (March 1, 2021) – On Sunday, February 28, 2021, at approximately 5:15 PM, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. 

A Ball Ground police officer attempted to stop a vehicle occupied by two subjects that met the description of a BOLO from Alabama.  The subjects were involved in multiple crimes in Alabama.  The vehicle did not stop and was pursued by the Ball Ground PD Officer onto the LAT Sportswear campus.   The subjects fled on foot from the vehicle into the woods behind the LAT building.  The Ball Ground Officer took fire from the subjects but was uninjured. 

Johnson County Man Arrested for Distribution of Child Pornography

Wrightsville, GA (March 1, 2021) – On Tuesday, February 9, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC) executed a search warrant at the residence of John Harris Carter, 25, in Wrightsville, Johnson County, GA. An investigation into Carter’s internet activity by the GBI’s CEACC Unit began after a report was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) related to the sexual exploitation of children by Carter via the internet. This investigation led to a search warrant of Carter’s residence in Johnson County, GA. As a result of the investigation, Carter was arrested and charged with one count of Distribution of Child Pornography. The GBI was assisted in this investigation by the Wrightsville Police Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Carter was booked into the Johnson County Jail.

Candler County Man Arrested for Distribution of Child Pornography

Metter, GA (March 1, 2021) – On Tuesday, February 16, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC) executed two search warrants related to a Sexual Exploitation of Children investigation involving Chad Anthony Barrett, 26, of Metter, GA.  An investigation into Barrett’s internet activity by the GBI’s CEACC Unit began after a report was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) related to the sexual exploitation of children by Barrett via the internet. This investigation led to the execution of the search warrants at Barrett’s residence in Candler County, GA and at Barrett’s employer in Emanuel County, GA. As a result of the investigation, Barrett was arrested and charged with one count of Distribution of Child Pornography. The GBI was assisted in this investigation by the Stillmore Police Department, the Candler County Sheriff’s Office, and the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office. Barrett was booked into the Emanuel County Jail.

Peach County Man Arrested for Distribution of Child Pornography

Byron, GA (March 1, 2021) – On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC) executed a search warrant at the residence of Ronald Mike Sanford, 71, in Byron, Peach County, GA. An investigation into Sanford’s internet activity by the GBI’s CEACC Unit began after a report was received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) related to the sexual exploitation of children by Sanford via the internet. This investigation led to a search warrant of Sanford’s residence in Peach County, GA. As a result of the investigation, Sanford was arrested and charged with one count of Distribution of Child Pornography. The GBI CEACC unit was assisted in this investigation by the Peach County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI Region 13 Field Office. Sanford was booked into the Peach County Jail.

GBI Charges McIntosh County Deputy with Aggravated Battery & Violation of Oath of Office

On Friday, February 26, 2021, the GBI charged McIntosh County Deputy Mark Gibson, age 48, with Aggravated Battery & Violation of Oath of Office.

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office requested that the GBI investigate allegations that Deputy Gibson severely injured a woman who was in the custody of the Sheriff’s Office. The investigation showed that Deputy Gibson body slammed the handcuffed woman, causing serious injury. 

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Catoosa County

Ringgold, GA (February 27, 2021) - On Saturday, February 27, 2021, at approximately 3:00 a.m, the GBI was requested by the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred at 12957 Alabama Highway, in Ringgold, GA.
