Michigan Woman Missing for 33 Years Identified with Genealogy Technology

Dade County, GA (March 24, 2022) – A Michigan woman who had been missing for 33 years has been identified as Stacey Lyn Chahorski of Norton Shores, Michigan.  On Friday, December 16, 1988, at around 2:00 p.m., the Dade County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI responded to the scene of a body located about 5 miles from the Alabama Stateline on I-59 northbound lane in Dade County, GA.  The body was of an unidentified woman that had been killed.  

For years, GBI agents and Dade County investigators worked diligently to identify the victim.  A GBI forensic artist made clay renderings and drew composites to recreate what the victim would look like in hopes of identifying her.

GBI and Hart County Sheriff’s Office Arrest Hart County Commissioner and Son

Hartwell, GA (March 23, 2022) – On March 21, 2022, the GBI was requested by the Hart County Sheriff’s Office to assist with an assault investigation that occurred on Saturday March 19, 2022. As a result, on March 22, Ricky Carter, age 64, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and three counts of cruelty to children. At the time of the incident on March 19, Ricky Carter was charged with terroristic threats/acts and pointing a pistol at another and had been granted a bond. Jake Carter, age 34, and Ricky Carter’s son, was arrested at the time of the incident and charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, terroristic threats/acts, and three counts of cruelty to children. Ricky Carter is a member of the Hart County Board of Commissioners.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Clayton County

Clayton County, GA (March 23, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Clayton County, Georgia.  The Clayton County Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.  One man was shot and died during the incident.   No officers were injured.


The preliminary information indicates that at 5:21 a.m., a 911 call was placed to the Clayton County Police Department about a man walking around the street with a gun.  Officers responded and made contact with a man, later identified as Charles Henry Calhoun, age 68, of Jonesboro.  Officers gave verbal commands to Calhoun to drop the gun.  Calhoun did not comply with the officers’ commands and pointed the gun at officers.  An officer fired his gun, hitting Calhoun.  Calhoun was pronounced deceased on scene. 

One Man Arrested for the Sexual Exploitation of Children in Peach County

Byron, GA (March 22, 2022) – On Thursday, March 17, 2022, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit, with the assistance of the Peach County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI Perry Office, and the GBI Middle Georgia Gang Task Force, executed a residential search warrant pertaining to an ongoing Sexual Exploitation of Children investigation. The investigation began after the GBI CEACC Unit received a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The cybertip involved the possession and/or distribution of explicit child sexual abuse material, commonly referred to as child pornography, which resolved to Peach County, GA.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in DeKalb County

DeKalb County, GA (March 15, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in DeKalb County, Georgia.  The DeKalb County Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Monday, March 14, 2022.  One man was shot during the incident.  No officers were injured.

The preliminary information indicates that around 3:30 p.m., DeKalb County police officers responded to domestic violence call at 1101 Creste Drive in the Heritage Reserve apartment complex.  When they arrived, officers encountered Ladderick Curry, age 42, who was armed with a shotgun.  Curry was in the doorway of apartment 1101 when he fired at least one shotgun round at officers as they approached.  At least one DeKalb police officer returned fire and Curry retreated inside the doorway of the apartment.  As additional officers arrived, Curry fired at least one more round.  Again, officers fired their guns.  During the incident, Curry was shot.  He was treated on scene and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.

Wayne County Man Arrested for the Sexual Exploitation of Children

Jesup, GA (March 15, 2022) – On Friday, March 11, 2022, James Burton Shaw, age 60, of Wayne County, Georgia, was arrested and charged with one count of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material) by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit. The GBI CEACC Unit began an investigation into Shaw’s online activity after receiving numerous cybertips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding the online possession of images depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This investigation led to a search warrant at Shaw’s camper home, where digital devices were searched and seized, and Shaw was subsequently arrested. The GBI CEACC Unit was assisted in the execution of the search warrant by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.   

Franklin County Man Arrested for the Sexual Exploitation of Children

Martin, GA (March 15, 2022) – On Friday, March 11, 2022, Howell Tim Scott, age 49, of Franklin County, Georgia, was arrested and charged with three counts of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material) and three counts Sexual Exploitation of Children (Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material) by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit. The GBI CEACC Unit began an investigation into Scott’s online activity after receiving a cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding the online possession of images depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This investigation led to a search warrant at Scott’s residence, where digital devices were searched and seized, and Scott was subsequently arrested. The GBI CEACC Unit was assisted in the execution of the search warrant by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.   

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Pulaski County

Hawkinsville, GA (March 15, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, GA. The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on March 15, 2022. No one was injured during the incident.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Cherokee County

Canton, GA (March 16, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Canton, Georgia. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on March 15, 2022. A man was shot and died during an encounter with Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies. No deputies were injured.

GBI Targets Gang Activity in Coffee County

Douglas, GA (March 14, 2022)The GBI received a request to investigate gang related crimes occurring in the Douglas, Coffee County, Georgia area from the Coffee County Sheriff’s Office. Information was also received from the Douglas Police Department, and the Department of Community Supervision. Region 4 Gang Specialists and Agents, Douglas Police Department Drug Investigators, Coffee County Detectives, Georgia State Patrol Troopers, and Department of Community Supervision Officers that has led investigators to document Bloods, Piru, Gangster Disciples, Down South Georgia Boys, Sur 13, Bounty Hunter, G-Shyne, and Ghostface Gangster Gang activity in Coffee County.
