GBI Public and Governmental Affairs Deputy Director Sworn in as First Woman President of the Georgia Chapter of NOBLE

Decatur, GA (February 2, 2022) - Natalie Ammons, Deputy Director of the GBI Office of Public and Governmental Affairs, has been sworn in as President of the Georgia Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE). DD Ammons is the first woman elected to this position since the chapter was incorporated in 1985. She has been a member of the organization since 2006 and was honored as NOBLE National Member of the Year in 2018. DD Ammons has been with the GBI since 1993.

“Natalie represents the Bureau well in everything she does, and we are proud of her for committing to lead the Georgia Chapter of NOBLE,” says GBI Director Vic Reynolds. “I support the mission of NOBLE and know she will succeed in this role.”

“We had dreams that one day NOBLE would see a female President,” says retired GBI Deputy Assistant Director Moses Ector. “Natalie will take this organization to new heights and get things done. “Ector is also past NOBLE National President, past Georgia Chapter President, and founding member of the chapter. 

In addition to NOBLE, DD Ammons is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, Georgia Association of Women in Public Safety, Peace Officers Association of Georgia, National Information Officers Association, Atlanta Metropol, Inc., and Rotary Club of South DeKalb.

Two Arrested in Muscogee County for the Sexual Exploitation of Children

Columbus, GA (January 28, 2022) – On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit, with the assistance of the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office and the GBI Columbus office, executed two residential search warrants related to separate investigations involving the Sexual Exploitation of Children. The investigations began after the GBI CEACC Unit, the host agency for the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, received numerous independent and unrelated cybertips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Those cybertips involved the possession and/or distribution of explicit child sexual abuse material, commonly referred to as child pornography, which resolved to Muscogee County, GA.

Americus Man Arrested for Trafficking Methamphetamine

Americus, GA (January 25, 2022) – On Tuesday, January 25, 2022, the GBI Southwestern Regional Drug Enforcement Office (SWRDEO) and Americus Police Department arrested Kasie Monson, age 30, for trafficking methamphetamine, possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. 

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (January 25, 2022) - The man involved in this OIS has been identified as Bobby Lee Sutton, age 59.

Atlanta, GA (January 23, 2022)The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, GA, involving a Fulton County Sheriff’s Office deputy. The Atlanta Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Sunday, January 23, 2022. One man was shot and has died. The deputy sustained a minor injury.

GBI Conducts Missing Child Investigation in Vienna, GA

Update:

The GBI has arrested and charged Keara Cotton with Murder, Concealing the Death of Another, and Cruelty to Children 2nd Degree.  Additionally, investigators obtained information that led to the discovery of human remains in Cordele, Crisp County near E. Sixteenth Avenue.  Agents will send the remains to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office for identification.

Vienna, GA (January 24, 2021) - The GBI is conducting a missing child investigation in Vienna, GA.  On Saturday, January 22, 2022, at about 12:30 p.m., the Vienna Police Department asked for investigative assistance in order to locate 4 year old Jayceion Mathis. Jayceion was reported missing by family members that state that they have not seen him in several months. Jayceion lived with his mother, Keara Cotton, age 27, in Vienna.  Since the complaint was filed on January 20, 2022, authorities have not been able to find Keara.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Polk County

Polk County, GA (January 25, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Polk County, GA.  The Aragon Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. Derek Rock, age 30, of Aragon, GA, has died.  No officers  were injured.

Preliminary information indicates that at about 6:00 p.m., an Aragon Police Department officer responded to 12 Walnut Street, Aragon, GA on a call of a person threatening suicide. Derek Rock was at the door with a gun to his head and threatening to shoot himself. The officer gave verbal commands to Rock for him to drop the weapon. Rock pointed the weapon at the officer and the officer fired multiple times at Rock, hitting Rock. The officer began to administer aid to Rock. Rock died at the scene.

The GBI investigation is active and ongoing. Once the investigation is done, the casefile will be given to the Polk County District Attorney’s Office for review.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Coweta County

Newnan, GA (January 24, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Newnan, GA.  The Newnan Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Sean Michael Kinney, 37, of Cumming, GA, has died.  No officers were injured.

Preliminary information indicates that at 5:22 p.m., a neighbor called 911 about a domestic incident that occurred at 25 Second Avenue, Newnan, GA.  At 5:27 p.m., the first officers arrived on scene.  When officers were unable to contact someone at the door, the officers queried the license plate of a car parked in the driveway and identified the victim of the domestic.  Officers called the woman but there was no answer.  The Newnan Police Department SWAT team and hostage negotiators were activated, a perimeter was secured around the residence, and numerous attempts were made to talk with the individuals with no success.

Shortly before 7:00 p.m., the SWAT team approached the front door of the home.  While stacked at the front door, a Newnan police officer saw Kinney through a window of the residence with a knife in his hand.  The officer then saw a door open behind Kinney with the woman sitting on the ground.  Kinney turned and started walking toward the woman with the knife in his hand, and the officer fired numerous times through the window killing Kinney. The woman was found safe. 

Three Arrested for Methamphetamine Charges in Cairo, GA

Cairo, GA (January 24, 2022) – On Friday, January 21, 2022, the GBI Southwestern Regional Drug Enforcement Office and Grady County Sheriff’s Office arrested Alton Jermain Byrden, age 47, and Wendy Rena Byrden, age 51, for trafficking methamphetamine, five counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and one count theft by receiving stolen property. Justin Adam Williamson, age 33, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine.

GBI Conducts Death Investigation in Evans County, GA

Claxton, GA (January 16, 2021) - The GBI is investigating a shooting incident that happened on Saturday, January 15, 2022. At about 10:30 p.m., the Evans County Sheriff's Office asked the GBI to assist with the incident that occurred at a house party at 2790 Caddie Green Road, Claxton, GA. When law enforcement arrived, they found that Eric Brown, Jr., age 18, of Glennville, GA, had been shot and died at the scene. Brown was taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.
