Jesup, GA (August 31, 2021) – On Monday, August 30, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation secured warrants for Christopher Reginald Sumlin, 31, of Jonesboro, Georgia for the murder of Jerry Lee Davis that occurred on January 13, 2021 at his home in Wayne County, Georgia. Sumlin was arrested and charged with Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Cruelty to Children, and Burglary.
Sumlin was already in custody in the Tatnall County Sheriff’s Office on charges related to the death of Bobby Kicklighter in Glennville, Georgia (https://gbi.georgia.gov/press-releases/2021-08-25/additional-arrest-glennville-murder-investigation).
Atlanta, GA (August 30, 2021) – On Sunday, August 29, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:34 a.m., an APD officer was flagged down by a citizen regarding a man armed with a metal pipe walking around hitting passing cars with the pipe.
Homerville, GA (August 30, 2021) – On Sunday, August 29, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Homerville Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:06 a.m., the Homerville Police Department and Clinch County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a 911 call of suspicious persons in a vehicle at 40 Thelma Hwy, Homerville, Georgia.
(Atlanta, GA) - On Sunday, August 29, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that at around 2:42 p.m., Atlanta Police Department (APD) officers, Georgia Tech Police Department officers, & Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to a call at the corner of State Street & Home Park, in Atlanta, about a man, later identified as Gray Bell, 40, of Roswell, who was armed with a weapon. During the incident, Bell attempted to leave the scene, and GSP troopers attempted to prevent him from leaving the scene by boxing him in with their car. As officers approached Bell, he got out of his car, pulled out a gun and chambered a round. An APD officer and GSP troopers fired their guns, shooting Bell. Bell died at a local hospital.
The GBI has charged Nathan Weekes, 25, a current Georgia Department of Corrections inmate with Conspiracy to Commit a Felony (Murder) and Party to a Crime in relation to the murder of Bobby Kicklighter.
The murder investigation showed that Weekes was involved with contraband smuggling inside Smith State Prison.
The Georgia Department of Corrections has charged Weekes with the following:
* 19 contraband related warrants
* Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine (one count)
* Unauthorized Possession of Weapon by Inmate (two counts)
* Items Prohibited for Possession by Inmates without the Consent of the Warden (sixteen counts)
The two investigations are related. They are active and ongoing.
(College Park, GA) - On Tuesday, August 24, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 9:48 p.m., members of the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Unit were attempting to execute an arrest warrant on Tory Brown, 22, of Atlanta, for Violation of Probation at 2135 Godby Road, Building 33, Apt 502, College Park, Fulton County, Georgia.
Toombs County, GA (August 23, 2021) – On Thursday, August 19, 2021, Clarence Lee Bostic, age 40, of Vidalia, Toombs County, was arrested following a drug investigation initiated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Southeastern Regional Drug Enforcement Office (SRDEO). The Toombs County Sheriff’s Office and the Vidalia Police Department assisted the GBI SRDEO in this investigation. A search warrant was served at 1114 JR Rollins Road in Vidalia, Toombs County, Georgia, by GBI SRDEO and the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office. During the search, a felony amount of methamphetamine, a misdemeanor amount of marijuana, and two firearms were seized.
(Allenhurst, GA) - On Saturday, August 21, 2021, at approximately 12:19 p.m., the GBI was requested by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:30 a.m., deputies responded to a 911 call of a domestic dispute at 186 Maggie Lane in Allenhurst, Georgia. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Daryl Jay Carr, 45, at the residence, which escalated into a hostage situation involving Carr’s wife, their two children and one unrelated child.
On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation obtained arrest warrants for Christopher Napolean Barrett II for Murder, Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon, and Felony Theft by Taking. Barrett, a 35-year-old Dalton resident, was found in possession of David Casler-Tyrrell’s vehicle in McMinn County, Tennessee. Barrett was in custody in Tennessee and was extradited to Georgia where he is being held at the Whitfield County Jail.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation also charged a third individual in the death investigation of Mr. Casler-Tyrrell. An arrest warrant was obtained for Darius Knight, a 19-year-old Dalton resident, for Concealing the Death of Another. Knight is being held at the Whitfield County Jail.
Cobb County, GA (August 19, 2021) – On Wednesday, August 18, 2021, the Cobb County Police Department asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.
Preliminary information indicates that around 3:30 p.m., a Cobb County Police Department officer observed a vehicle being driven recklessly in the area of South Loop and Powder Springs Road in Marietta, Cobb County, Georgia. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver, identified as Devonte Dawayne Brown, 28, of Austell, initially pulled over, but then refused to comply and sped away. Multiple officers from the Cobb County Police Department and Cobb County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Brown. At one point, the officers attempted to box in the vehicle. During this incident, Brown attempted to get away and hit multiple police vehicles. As police officers were trying to take Brown into custody, a Cobb County Police Department officer fired his gun, striking Brown. Brown was transported to a local area hospital where he died.
