Forsyth, GA (May 27, 2020) – On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, GBI Agents arrested Deon Damon Bowden, 27, for his role in the incidents leading up to, and including, the officer involved shooting that involved Forsyth Police Department officers and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies on May 16, 2020. Bowden has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated cruelty to animals, battery, and battery family violence. Bowden is being held at the Monroe County Jail.
Forsyth, GA (May 17, 2020) – On Saturday, May 16, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region Six Office was requested by the Forsyth Police Department and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Savannah, GA (May 27, 2020) – On Friday, May 22, 2020, agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit, assisted the Savannah Police Department's Special Victims Unit and active members of the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force in the execution of a search warrant at the residence of Phillip Ryan Smart, 31, in Savannah, Chatham County, GA.
Atlanta, GA (May 26, 2020) – On Monday, May 25, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:50 p.m., APD officers responded to shots fired in the area of Parkway Drive and Wabash Avenue in Atlanta. APD officers located a white SUV that was believed to be involved in the shots fired call. The white SUV came to a stop on Highland Avenue near Jackson Street. Four male subjects exited the vehicle. One of the subjects exited the vehicle with a firearm. APD officers fired several shots during the incident, striking one of the male subjects, identified as Reginald Carter, 30, of Conley. After a brief chase, Reginald Carter and two other subjects, identified as Demonte Thomas, 29, of Jonesboro, and Artez Carter, 24, of Atlanta, were apprehended and taken into custody by APD. A firearm was recovered from the scene. The fourth subject fled the area and his current whereabouts are unknown.
Update: The subject has been identified as Kenneth Anthony Howard, age 62, of Decatur, GA. He is expected to recover from his injuries. Yesterday, the DeKalb County Police Department issued warrants for his arrest on a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer.
DeKalb County, GA (May 24, 2020) – On Sunday, May 24, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.
May 22, 2020 Update:
On May 21, 2020, Desmond Lavonta Brown, age 28, was rearrested by the GBI for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of marijuana of less than an ounce. This arrest comes after also being arrested on May 20, 2020 in Bartow County by the U.S. Marshals Service & the Bartow/Cartersville Drug Task Force for possession of over an ounce of marijuana. He currently remains in custody in Floyd County Jail.
The victim’s (Vanita Richardson) vehicle has not been located. Anyone with information pertaining to this case should contact the GBI tipline at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477).
May 20, 2020 Update:
The following individuals have been arrested in connection with the double homicide investigation in Rome, GA:
Arrested 5/18/20: Desmond Lavonta Brown, age 28, charge - misdemeanor obstruction of a police officer.
Arrested 5/19/20: Devin Lashawn Watts, age 36, charges - theft of receiving stolen property; possession of a firearm by convicted felon.
These arrests were the results of search warrants executed on apartments and vehicles based on leads that were developed and tips received from the GBI Tip Line. This investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information pertaining to this this case is urged to contact the GBI at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477).
May 21st Update:
On May 21, 2020, the GBI arrested William “Roddie” Bryan Jr., age 50, on charges of Felony Murder & Criminal Attempt to Commit False Imprisonment. These charges stem from the February 23, 2020 incident that resulted in the death of Ahmaud Arbery. He will be booked into the Glynn County Jail.
This case is being investigated in partnership with District Attorney Joyette Holmes of the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.
May 20th Update:
On Tuesday, May 19, 2020, at approximately 6:39 PM, GBI agents executed a search warrant at the home of Gregory & Travis McMichael. This investigative act is part of the Ahmaud Arbery murder investigation. No further details are being released at this time due to the active and ongoing case.
Decatur, GA (May 21, 2020) – Since March 16, 2020, when Georgia public elementary, secondary, and post-secondary schools ceased in person classes, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit, along with other GBI regional offices, have executed 16 exigent search warrants related to online child sexual exploitation. In addition, the GBI CEACC Unit has assisted other agencies with similar search warrants. As a result, the GBI has arrested 15 individuals for the possession, distribution and/or production of child sexual abuse images. Some of those arrested were also charged with the associated crime of child molestation. Consequently, the GBI CEACC Unit has rescued 8 children from situations in which they were being sexually abused. Other previous child victims were also identified but the offender no longer had access to the child. Some of the offenders subsequently indicated they had numerous undetected victims. It is possible additional victims will be discovered as more interviews are conducted and digital forensic analysis of digital devices occurs. Additional charges and arrests may be forthcoming.
Wrightsville, GA (May 20, 2020) – On Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at approximately 6:06 p.m., the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 185 Tucker Grove Church Road, Wrightsville, Johnson County, GA, in reference to a female being shot. Johnson County Sheriff’s Office subsequently requested the assistance of the GBI Eastman office.
Macon, GA (May 20, 2020) – On Tuesday, May 19, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 13 Perry Office was requested by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.
Ty Ty, GA (May 18, 2020) – On Sunday, May 17, 2020, the Tift County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to assist in a death investigation.
On the evening of Sunday, May 17, 2020, the Tift County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a deceased person in the 100 block of Ty Ty Sycamore Road, Ty Ty, GA. Upon arrival, responding deputies discovered the body of Dexter Bernard Patterson, 49, of Ty Ty. Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed on Patterson at the GBI Crime Lab in Macon.
