GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville, GA (May 24, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County, GA. The Gwinnett County Police Department requested the GBI conduct an independent investigation after a shooting occurred in the area of Pine Lane and Pine Arbor Lane in Lawrenceville, GA. One man was shot and is being treated at Northside Gwinnett Hospital in critical condition. One K-9 officer was shot and is in stable condition.  

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:17 p.m. on May 23, officers were dispatched to an aggravated battery call at 617 Pine Lane, Lawrenceville. Levi Bryan, age 17, of Oakwood, entered the home with a gun and threatened the individuals inside, to include his girlfriend. Bryan was made to leave the home prior to officers’ arrival and was seen walking behind houses close by. When officers encountered Bryan in the woods behind houses on Pine Lane, Bryan fired his gun, shooting a K-9 officer. Officers returned fire, striking Bryan.

Jones County Man Arrested for the Sexual Exploitation of Children

Macon, GA (May 23, 2022) – On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit, with the assistance of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI Milledgeville field office, and the GBI Middle Georgia Gang Task Force, executed a residential search warrant pertaining to an ongoing sexual exploitation of children investigation. The investigation began after the GBI CEACC Unit received multiple cybertips from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The cybertips involved the possession and/or distribution of explicit child sexual abuse material, commonly referred to as child pornography, which resolved to Jones County, GA.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Haralson County

Haralson County, GA (May 20, 2022) - Willie Lee Austin died on May 18, 2022 as a result of the officer involved shooting on December 18, 2021.

ORIGINAL RELEASE:

Haralson County, GA (December 20, 2021) – The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Haralson County, GA.  The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) and the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Saturday, December 18, 2021.  One man, identified as Willie Lee Austin, age 30, of Olive Branch, Mississippi is in critical condition. 

Preliminary information indicates that Polk County Police Department officers observed a truck speeding in Polk County, Georgia. A Polk County P.D. officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop on Austin who was driving the truck. Austin failed to stop, and there was a pursuit through Polk County into Haralson County on GA HWY 27. During the pursuit, multiple agencies assisted, including GSP and HCSO. A Georgia State Patrol trooper performed a PIT maneuver on the truck. While GSP troopers and HCSO deputies approached the truck, the investigation shows that the truck accelerated towards a GSP trooper and HCSO deputy. A GSP trooper and HCSO deputy fired into the truck, shooting Austin. 

Austin was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is currently recovering. No officers were injured in this incident. A female passenger was also inside the truck. She was not injured during the incident.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Cobb County

Mableton, GA (May 20, 2022) –  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer involved shooting in Cobb County, Georgia. The Cobb County Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on May 19, 2022. One man has died.  No officers were injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that at 8:29 p.m., a resident of 4470 Hicks Road, Mableton, Cobb County, Georgia, placed a 911 call about a suicidal man with a gun.  When police responded to the home, they were told that the man, identified as Tavis Latimore Carithers, 23, of Mableton, had been shooting a gun at family members.  Officers attempted to speak with Carithers and at some point during the incident, Carithers fired his gun at officers.  Officers returned fire and Carithers retreated into the home.  Officers attempted to call Carithers out of the home and at some point, Carithers left the house and stepped into the garage.  Once again, Carithers fired his gun at officers.  Officers returned fire, hitting Carithers.  Carithers died on scene. 

Madison County Man Arrested for Sexual Exploitation of Children

Commerce, GA (May 19, 2022) – On Monday, May 16, 2022, Mack Lee Lackey, age 24, of Madison County, Georgia, was arrested for 1 count of Obscene Internet Contact with a Child by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit. The GBI CEACC Unit was requested by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office to assist with an investigation about a man chatting online with a 10-year-old child. The man was making attempts to meet the child in person for sexual activity.  During the course of the investigation, the man was identified as Lackey and an arrest warrant was obtained.  The GBI CEACC Unit was assisted in the arrest of Lackey by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Lackey was taken to the Madison County Jail upon his arrest.  

This investigation is part of the ongoing effort by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, housed within the GBI’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit, to identify those involved in the child pornography trade. The ICAC Program, created by the U. S. Department of Justice, was developed in response to the increasing number of children and teenagers using the Internet, the proliferation of child sexual abuse material, and the heightened online activity by predators searching for unsupervised contact with underage victims. 

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (May 19, 2022) – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on May 18, 2022. One man has died. One security guard was injured. No officers were injured during the incident.

Preliminary information indicates that about 7:45 p.m., a Fogo De Chao employee placed a 911 call at the restaurant located at 3101 Piedmont Road, Atlanta reporting a man, later identified as Nygil Cullins, age 22, of Atlanta, who was being abusive to employees in the bar. Cullins, a former Fogo de Chao employee, was described as having a gun on his side. Officers responded and found Cullins at the bar. As officers were interacting with Cullins, he began to resist.  One officer attempted to use a Taser to gain control, but it had no effect. Cullins pulled a handgun from his waistband and fired at the officers and a nearby, unarmed security guard. The security guard was hit with at least one round. The officers returned fire and Cullins was hit.  Cullins was treated at the scene by the officers. Emergency medical responders took over when they arrived on scene. Cullins died at the scene. The security guard was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Rockdale County

Stockbridge, GA (May 18, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Stockbridge, Rockdale County, GA. The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI conduct an independent investigation after a shooting incident occurred in the area of the 5300 block of Alexanders Lake Road, Stockbridge, Rockdale County, GA. One man was shot and is being treated at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. No officers were injured during the incident.

GBI Makes Arrest in Baxley Death Investigation

Baxley, GA (May 17, 2022) – Ronnie “RJ” May, age 29, of Sandersville, GA, is arrested and charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and Tampering with Evidence. The arrest is related to the shooting death of Lennal Dasher, age 29, of Baxley, GA. The Baxley Police Department requested the GBI assist with the death investigation.

GBI Arrests Statesboro Man for Theft

Metter, GA (May 13, 2022) – The GBI has arrested Jeffery Lamar Lanier, 48, of Statesboro, for one count of theft by conversion, one count of financial transaction card fraud, and one count of computer theft. Additional charges relating to the theft are expected.

On April 29, 2022, the GBI was requested by the Metter Police Department to assist in an investigation involving a financial theft from Restoration Worship Center in Metter, Georgia. The subsequent investigation revealed Lanier, acting in his capacity as Chief Financial Officer, accessed the church’s accounts and credit card stealing more than $90,000.00 over a two-year period for his personal use.

Pike County Man Arrested for Sexual Exploitation of Children

Molena, GA (May 13, 2022) – On Thursday, May 5, 2022, Caden Collis, age 17, of Pike County, Georgia, was charged with 3 counts of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material), 1 count of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material), and 1 count of Tampering with Evidence, by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit.

The GBI CEACC Unit began an investigation into Collis’ online activity after receiving a Cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding the online possession of images depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The investigation led to a search warrant at Collis’ residence in Pike County, Georgia, and his subsequent arrest. The Pike County Sheriff’s Office assisted the GBI with this case.
