GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Savannah

Savannah, GA (February 21, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Savannah, Georgia. The Savannah Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at around 5:00 a.m.  No officers were injured in this incident.  Zachary Smith, age 24, of Ellabell, Georgia, was injured and remains in the hospital.

The preliminary information indicates that around 4:25 a.m., an individual confronted Savannah Police Department officers saying that he had been robbed at gunpoint. The man provided a description and a name (Zachary Smith) to the officers.  The description and call details were put out over the radio. A short time later, an officer located a man fitting the description in an area between White Bluff Rd and Abercorn Street.  Officers chased Smith through an apartment complex and commercial business area, ending in the parking lot of Home Source Rentals located at 9133 White Bluff Road. While running, Smith pointed his weapon at the officer, and the officer fired, hitting Smith in the leg. Medical aid was rendered on scene and Smith was taken to Memorial Health where he is listed in stable condition.  Agents recovered a weapon from the scene.   

GBI Conducts Death Investigation in Richmond Hill

The GBI is investigating the death of a Richmond Hill man.  The Richmond Hill Police Department asked to the GBI to assist on Sunday, February 21, 2022, at around 3:00 p.m.  The GBI has charged Eric Montrell Wright, age 36, with murder.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in East Dublin

East Dublin, GA (February 19, 2022) - The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in East Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia. The East Dublin Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Friday, February 18, 2022. No officers were injured.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Columbus

(February 16,2022) The individuals involved in this OIS with Columbus PD are: Jakori Thomas, age 17, Elijah Smith, age 17, and a 16 year old male.

Columbus, GA (February 8, 2022) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Columbus, Georgia. The Columbus Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Monday, February 7, 2022. No officers were injured in this incident.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Stephens County

UPDATE:

(February 16, 2022) –  The man involved in this officer involved shooting is identified as Joel Eugene Keller, 36, of Toccoa, GA. The GBI has taken an arrest warrant for Keller for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. Additional charges are anticipated. Keller is currently in stable condition. 

Stephens County, GA (February 15, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Stephens County, GA.  The Stephens County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Tuesday, February 15, 2022.  One man was shot and injured.  No deputies were injured.

The early investigation indicates that at 1:17 p.m., a Stephens County deputy attempted a traffic stop on Yearwood Rd. in Toccoa, Stephens County, GA on a man driving a Chevrolet Silverado. The driver of the Chevrolet Silverado refused to stop and a pursuit followed.  The driver of the truck ultimately wrecked at Broad River Road in Toccoa and got out of the truck and approached the deputy.   There was a struggle between the driver and deputy and during this struggle, the deputy’s gun was unholstered.  The deputy and the driver fought over the gun during which the deputy fired one shot, striking the driver.     

 

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Newnan

Newnan, GA (February 15, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Newnan, Georgia. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Tuesday, February 15, 2022. No officers were injured in this incident. One man was shot multiple times.

The preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at around 12:25 p.m., the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a tractor trailer truck which had been stolen out of Forest Park, Georgia. At the time of the 911 call, the truck was being electronically tracked on Interstate 85 in Newnan. Responding deputies located the truck and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver of the truck, later identified as Bobby Gene Ingram, 56, did not stop which resulted in a pursuit.

Man Arrested in Cordele Homicide Investigation

Cordele, GA (February 14, 2022)The GBI is assisting the Cordele Police Department with a death investigation. Ricardo Lozano, 51, of Cordele, GA, was arrested by Cordele Police Officers in connection with the death of Richard King, also of Cordele, GA, and charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of Firearm or Knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain crimes.

Shortly before 4:00 p.m. on February 7, 2022, the Cordele Police Department was called to the 700 block of Schley Avenue in Cordele, GA about a fight that ended with a stabbing. King was taken to the hospital for treatment where he later died.

“Operation Heartbreak” Targets On-line Child Predators

Moultrie, GA – (February 14, 2022)  –  Twelve people have been arrested after a proactive online undercover investigation coordinated by the Georgia Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC), the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia.  Each person arrested over a three-day period beginning Thursday, February 10, 2022 was charged with Computer or Electronic Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 2007.  There may be additional charges and arrests.

“Operation Heartbreak” was a three-day proactive effort centered in Moultrie, GA.  The operation took several months of planning and involved the collaboration of twelve law enforcement agencies and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia.  The arrestees, ranging in age from 23 to 65, traveled from areas around South Georgia with the intent to meet a child for sex.  Every individual arrested during the operation believed they were going to a location to meet with a child and engage in prearranged sex acts.  Thirteen mobile devices were seized as evidence during the operation. 

Arrests Made in Dublin Homicide Investigation

Dublin, GA (February 13, 2022) – On Sunday, February 13, 2022, Gary Cross, age 31, and Marueisha Treadwell, age 25, both of Dublin, were arrested related to the death of Marquis Horne, age 34, of Milledgeville. Cross is charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault, and Treadwell is charged with one count of false statements. Treadwell is Cross’ girlfriend. Cross and Treadwell were transported to the Laurens County Detention Center.

GBI Makes Arrests in Colquitt County Homicide

Norman Park, GA (February 9, 2022) – On Wednesday, February 9, 2022, Thomas Montgomery Weeks, age 32, and Jeffery Lynn Weeks, age 61, both of Norman Park, GA, have been charged with Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, Burglary and Home Invasion in connection with the death of John Asbery Taylor, age 35, who lived on the same property in a separate residence as the Weeks.
