GBI Arrests Former Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy in Use of Force Investigation

Jackson County, GA (May 12, 2022) - On May 12, 2022, the GBI arrested former Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputy John Pursley, 53, of Jefferson, and charged him with two counts of simple assault and one count of violation of oath of public officer.  Pursley turned himself into the Jackson County Jail without incident.

Winder, GA (May 9, 2022) – Police need your help locating Miguel Martinez, age 54, of Winder, GA. Martinez is wanted for felony murder, aggravated assault, and theft by taking (motor vehicle) in connection to the death of David Wolfe, age 69, of Winder. The Winder Police Department requested the GBI investigate Wolfe’s death on May 7, 2022.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Tucker

Tucker, GA (May 10, 2022) - The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Tucker, GA. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office (DKSO) asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on May 9, following a shooting incident that occurred at a Publix grocery store.

Decatur County Couple Arrested for Felony Murder and Cruelty to Children

Bainbridge, GA (May 9, 2022) –  Chadwick Lee Smith and Chavonne Alice McGinness were arrested for Felony Murder and 2nd Degree Felony Cruelty to Children at their home on May 3, 2002, and booked into the Decatur County Jail.

Irwin County Man Arrested for Drug Trafficking and Weapon Charges

Ocilla, GA (May 6, 2022) – On Tuesday, May 3, 2022, the GBI Southwestern Regional Drug Enforcement Office, Southcentral Drug Task Force, Irwin County Sheriff’s Office, and the Georgia Department of Corrections conducted a joint investigation into the actions of Reginald Eugene Ford, age 48, of Ocilla, GA. Ford was arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

GBI Makes Arrest in Mortgage Closing Fraud Investigation

Decatur, GA (May 6, 2022) – Georgia Bureau of Investigation Cyber Crime Center agents arrested Stella Mae Zebic, age 42, of Brookhaven on April 28, 2022. Zebic is charged with felony theft by taking and was taken to the DeKalb County Jail. The investigation was conducted in coordination with the Cyber Fraud Task Force of the Georgia Office of the Attorney General, the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, and the FBI Atlanta Cyber Task Force.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA (May 4, 2022) –  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. The Atlanta Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on May 4, following a shooting that occurred at Roasters located at 2770 Lenox Road in Atlanta. One man has died. No officers were injured during the incident.

GBI and Snellville Police Department Announce the Arrest of Grayson Man in Death of 8-Month-Old Girl

Snellville, GA (May 4, 2022)The GBI and the Snellville Police Department announce the arrest of Davied Whatley, 20, of Grayson, Georgia in the death of his 8-month-old daughter, Nova Grace Whatley-Trejo.  Whatley has been charged with 2nd degree murder.  Whatley was arrested with the assistance of the Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT, Snellville Police Department Criminal Investigative Division, and the Snellville Police Department uniform patrol.  Whatley will be booked into the Gwinnett County Jail.

The investigation shows that Whatley came to the Snellville Police Department around 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday to retrieve firearms that had been seized in a previous case.  Unknown to police, Whatley parked his car in the City Hall parking lot and left his 8-month-old daughter in the car.  Whatley walked into the police department without his infant daughter and was taken into custody for a misdemeanor probation violation (hit and run – no insurance).  All interaction with police was captured on bodycam and in-car video until he arrived at the Gwinnett County Jail.  Review of bodycam & in-car video shows that Whatley made no comments about leaving Nova in the car.  Nova’s grandmother brought her to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.

GBI and Brooks County Sheriff’s Office Conduct Death Investigation

Gaona has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in McAllen, Tx. He will be extradited to Georgia to face his charges.

Brooks County, GA (May 2, 2022) – GBI agents and Brooks County Sheriff’s Office investigators have secured arrest warrants for Roberto Andablo Gaona, age 31. Gaona is charged with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, related to the death of Yessica Baena Torres, age 22.
