UPDATE - GBI Issues Blue Alert and Investigates Death of Alamo Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

UPDATE:

Alamo, GA (October 13, 2021) – On Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Charlotte Ferguson, age 45, of Alamo, GA, was arrested and charged with Hindering the Apprehension or Punishment of a Criminal. Charlotte Ferguson is the sister of Damien Anthony Ferguson, aka Luke Ferguson.

On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, Damien Ferguson was also charged with Bias Motivated Intimidation of First Responders, related to the shooting death of Officer Dylan Harrison. Asia Kinsey, age 24, of Alamo, GA, was also arrested and charged with Terroristic Threats and Acts. Kinsey’s arrest is for a threatening social media post she made on October 9 relating to this investigation.

Charlotte Ferguson was taken to the Crisp County Jail and Asia Kinsey was taken to the Truetlen County Jail. Damien Ferguson remains in the Laurens County Jail.

Alamo, GA (October 10, 2021) – On Sunday, October 10, 2021, shortly before 2:30 p.m., Damien Ferguson was taken into custody during the execution of a search warrant at his residence in Alamo, GA without incident by the State of Georgia SWAT Team and U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Ferguson has been arrested and charged with Murder for the shooting death of Officer Dylan Harrison and Aggravated Stalking related to a previous domestic incident. He is currently being held at the Laurens County Jail.

On Friday night, Officer Dylan Harrison was on duty when he made contact with a man for a traffic violation in the parking lot of the Circle K located across the street from the Alamo Police Department. Officer Harrison asked the man for his name and identification and the man refused. The man got into a verbal altercation with Officer Harrison, that escalated to the man pushing the officer. Officer Harrison attempted to place the man under arrest. The man did not comply which led to the officer discharging his Taser. The man was arrested and taken to the Wheeler County Jail. He is a known associate of Damien Ferguson. It is believed that the ambush-style attack on Officer Harrison was retaliation for the incident and arrest of the man.

Alamo, GA (October 9, 2021) – On Saturday, October 9, 2021, at 1:01 a.m., part-time Alamo Police Department Officer Dylan Harrison was shot and killed outside the Alamo Police Department.

A Blue Alert has been issued for Damien Anthony Ferguson, aka Luke Ferguson, age 43, of Alamo, GA. A Blue Alert is a public safety alert that is issued when a suspect who has killed or seriously injured an officer has not been apprehended and may be a serious threat to the public.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Monroe

Monroe, GA (October 9, 2021) - On Friday, October 8, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Monroe Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting. Preliminary information reveals that at approximately 3:00 p.m., Monroe Police Department officers were executing a search warrant at 340 Towler Street, Lot 12, in Monroe, GA. Upon entry, Daniel Hernandez, 21, pointed a gun at the police officers. One officer fired his weapon, but no one was struck. Hernandez surrendered to officers. No officers were injured during the incident.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Evans County

Evans, County, GA (October 9, 2021) – On Friday, October 8, 2021, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the GBI was requested by the Evans County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred off of Firetower Road in Claxton, GA. Preliminary information indicates that multiple law enforcement agencies were conducting a roadblock/license check at Highways 129 and 169 in Evans County, when a Kia Rio approached the checkpoint. The driver, later identified as Ramone Dwight, 29, of Claxton, told a Georgia State Patrol trooper that he did not have his driver’s license on him and provided the trooper with a false name.

GBI Investigates Death in Sylvania, GA

Sylvania, GA (October 7, 2021) – On October 7, 2021, the GBI arrested Walter Washington, age 70, of Sylvania, GA and charged him with one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.  On October 6, 2021, at approximately 4:00 p.m., the Screven County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the GBI with a death investigation that occurred at a residence located on Bryan’s Bridge Road in Sylvania, GA.

The initial investigation revealed that there was a domestic dispute between Washington and his grandson, Javoris Scott, age 29, that escalated when Scott allegedly came towards Washington. Washington shot Scott.  Scott was taken to the hospital where he died.  An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler. 

Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney Announces Guilty Plea of Defendant in GBI Gang and Human Trafficking Investigation

Ellijay, Glimer County, GA (October 6, 2021) – Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney Alison Sosebee announces a conviction by guilty plea in a gang and human trafficking case against Cordarrel Blandburg, age 28, of Clayton County.

Blandburg pled guilty to Violation of Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, Criminal Attempt to Commit Human Trafficking, and False Imprisonment charges following a GBI investigation.  He was sentenced to 20 years to serve 6 years.  He will also have to register as a sex offender. 

The GBI and the Ellijay Police Department arrested Blandburg in 2019 on charges of Violation of Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act and Human Trafficking.  The investigation worked by the GBI’s Gang Task Force (GTF), Human Exploitation and Trafficking (HEAT) unit, and Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) unit indicated that an associate of the criminal street gang known as the Gangster Disciples was trafficking a woman in Georgia and Alabama for nearly 2 years.

The victim bravely confronted her trafficker by reading a victim impact statement in court.  She thanked the GBI and her advocate for the work that was put into this case.  She is a survivor and well on her way to recovery.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Crisp County

UPDATE: October 5,2021

The man involved in this officer involved shooting is identified as James Daynair Goodwin, age 46. Goodwin remains in the hospital in stable condition.

Crisp County, GA (October 4, 2021) – On Sunday, October 3, 2021, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the GBI was requested by the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) to investigate an officer involved shooting. Preliminary investigation indicates CCSO deputies responded to multiple 911 calls about a man with a handgun on I-75 Southbound near mile marker 91 in Crisp County. Deputies encountered a man walking along the interstate in and out of traffic, causing a traffic jam. A CCSO deputy attempted to talk to the man to determine what was going on. The man then fired at the deputy with a handgun. The deputy returned fire, striking the man. The man was airlifted to a trauma center in Macon for treatment. No officers were injured during this incident. 

GBI Makes Arrest in 2008 Lakeland, GA Murder

Lakeland, GA (October 2, 2021)On Friday, September 24, 2021, the GBI obtained arrests warrants and charged Marquis Williams, age 30, and Andrew Johnson, age 36, with Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, for their involvement in the 2008 murder of Norris Miller. Both Williams and Johnson were already in custody in separate facilities on unrelated charges.

Fannin County Man Arrested for the Sex Exploitation of Children

Blue Ridge, GA (September 30, 2021) – On Wednesday, September 29, 2021, Richard Shane Arp, age 45, of Fannin County, Georgia, was arrested and charged with three counts of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material) and one count of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material) by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes (CEACC) Unit. The GBI CEACC Unit began an investigation into Arp’s online activity after receiving a Cybertip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) regarding the online possession and distribution of images depicting child sexual abuse material (CSAM). This investigation led to a search warrant at Arp’s home on Wednesday, September 29, 2021, where digital devices were searched and seized, and Arp was subsequently arrested. The GBI CEACC Unit was assisted in the execution of the search warrant by the GBI Special Enforcement Team (SET), the Georgia State Patrol, and the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office. 

Arp was transported to the Fannin County Jail upon his arrest.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in LaGrange

Update: The man involved in this OIS is identified as Ronald McCormick, age 39, of LaGrange.

LaGrange, GA (September 28, 2021) – On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at approximately 5:55 a.m., the GBI was requested by the LaGrange Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:18 a.m., a City of LaGrange employee made a 911 call reporting a suspicious man walking and carrying a machete near Karvelas Pizza restaurant. An officer responded and contacted the man who identified himself. The man continued walking and the officer radioed dispatch to run a query on the man. The officer was advised by dispatch that the man was wanted on three superior court bench warrants. 

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Marietta

(Marietta, GA) - On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, the GBI was requested by the Marietta Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting. 

The early investigation indicates that at 6:53 a.m., there was a carjacking near 1438 Peachtree Street in Atlanta. A man, later identified as Trent Andrew Emry, age 29, of Canton, GA, had just attempted to carjack someone else.  Emry was armed with a bow and arrow. At approximately 7:45 a.m., a Cobb County Police Officer responded to a vehicle crash involving Emry at South Marietta Parkway and Atlanta Street in Marietta, Georgia. The vehicle crashed into a bridge support for a CSX rail line that passes over South Marietta Parkway. Emry got out of the passenger’s side of the vehicle with the bow and arrow and pointed it at the Cobb County officer. A Marietta Police Department officer had arrived on scene to back up the Cobb County Police officer. One of the officers fired at least one round, hitting Emry.
