GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Sylvester, GA

October 28, 2020 Update:

The autopsy on Jakerion Shmoud Jakson has been completed, and the results are pending further testing.  The early investigation indicates that Jackson brandished a handgun during the incident.  The officer provided repeated commands for Jackson to drop the handgun, but he did not comply.  That handgun was later found in close proximity to Jackson.  A second handgun was found on Jackson. This investigation is active and ongoing and will be turned over to the Tift County DA’s Office once completed.

Sylvester, GA (October 24, 2020) – On Saturday, October 24, 2020, at approximately 8:25 a.m., the GBI was requested by the Sylvester Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation at 615 E. Franklin St, Sylvester, Worth County, Georgia.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Sylvester Police Officer was attempting to conduct a traffic stop in Sylvester, Georgia.  A brief car chase ensued with the subject fleeing the scene on foot.  Approximately three hours later, multiple 911 calls were received describing a suspicious person that matched the description of the subject from the earlier car chase in the area of where the subject fled on foot.  A Sylvester Police Officer encountered the subject, later identified as Jakerion Shmoud Jackson, age 19. This encounter led to the officer discharging his firearm, resulting in Jackson being struck.  Jackson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Clayton State University Shooting Incident

October 28, 2020 Update:

All four suspects are now in police custody at the Troup County Jail.

On Saturday, October 24, 2020 the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Clayton State University Police Department (CSUPD) to assist with a shooting investigation.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., CSUPD officers responded to a call of a student being shot in Laker Hall.  CCSUPD officers and students rendered aid to the victim.  The student was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

The investigation found that four males were involved in the shooting incident.  Clayton State University’s on-campus surveillance system identified a vehicle leaving the area that was occupied by the shooters.  The car was located in LaGrange, GA by the LaGrange Police Department at approximately 1:30 p.m.; however, the four males were not in it.

GBI Arrests Ware County Jailer on Sexual Battery and Sexual Assault Charges

Waycross, GA (October 27, 2020) – On Monday, October 26, 2020, the GBI arrested Ware County Detention Officer Matthew Lawrence, 22, of Blackshear, GA, for Aggravated Sexual Battery and Sexual Assault by Persons with Supervisory or Disciplinary Authority.

GBI Investigating Cook County Shootings - UPDATE


Correction: Damian Cayo’s last name was listed as Cato in the original press release.

Damian Cayo has been arrested and charged with one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Cayo has been transported to the Cook County Jail. Warrants have been obtained for Dexter Simmons for one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Simmons remains hospitalized. Warrants have also been obtained for Corby Traylor, 38, of Adel, for one count of Aggravated Assault and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Adel, GA (October 24, 2020) – On Saturday, October 24, 2020, the GBI’s Douglas Regional Office received a request from the Adel Police Department to assist with an aggravated assault investigation. At approximately 3:00 a.m., the Adel Police Department responded to the Waffle House on 4th Street in Adel, Cook County, Georgia, in reference to a 911 call of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found Dexter Simmons, 40, of Adel, suffering from gunshot wounds. While on scene, the officers heard gunshots and were dispatched to 403 N. Oak Street in Adel. Upon arrival, officers found Damian Rashad Cato, 28, of Sparks, Georgia, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

GBI Makes Arrest in Bulloch County Murder Investigation

Bulloch County, GA (October24, 2020) – On Saturday, October 24, 2020, Lee Allen Mayhew, age 44, was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of firearm during the commission of crime, theft by taking motor vehicle, and burglary. 

On Friday, October 23, 2020, at 6:50 p.m., the Bulloch County Sheriff's Office requested the GBI to assist with a death investigation.  Preliminary information shows that Bonnie Lanier Rushing was murdered at her home located on Stilson Leefield Road, Statesboro, Georgia in the afternoon hours of October 23rd. Rushing was found deceased at her home with a gunshot wound.  It appears that the perpetrator entered the residence and at some point had contact with Rushing.

GBI Makes Arrest in Brooks County Double Murder Investigation - UPDATE

Brooks County, GA (October 23, 2020) - The second victim has been identified as Deshaun Lamar Scott, 36, of Cleveland, OH.


Brooks County, GA (October 22, 2020) – On Wednesday, October 21, 2020, Kenny Pruitt, age 36, of Cleveland, OH, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of firearm during the commission of a crime, and two counts of possession of firearm by convicted felon.

On Wednesday, October 21, 2020, at approximately 3:28 p.m., Brooks County Sheriff Mike Dewey requested the GBI to investigate two males who had been shot and killed on Emerson Road near Grooverville Road in South Brooks County.  One of the victims has been identified as John Timothy Thompson, age 56, of East Liverpool, Ohio.  The second victim’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Bainbridge, GA (October 23, 2020) - On Thursday, October 22, 2020, Alvin Douglas Boger, III, 29, of Bainbridge, GA, was taken into custody during a traffic stop conducted by the Leon County (FL) Sheriff’s Office in Tallahassee, FL, after a coordinated effort between the GBI, the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, the Tallahassee, FL Police Department, and the Leon County Sheriff’s Office. Boger is charged with one count of Possession of Child Pornography and was taken to the Decatur County Jail.

Douglas, GA (October 17, 2020) – On Saturday, October 17, 2020, GBI agents and Coffee County Sheriff’s Office investigators secured arrest warrants for Kadeem Rashad Williams, 28, of Douglas, for Aggravated Assault, Possession of Firearm During the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon.
