GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Savannah
Savannah, GA (June 23, 2026) – At the request of the Savannah Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. Nicholaus Oxendine, age 35, of Savannah, Georgia, was shot and killed in the incident. Two officers sustained minor injuries.
Preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at about 7:15 a.m., two Savannah Police Department officers were on patrol when they saw Oxendine loitering around a closed business near the intersection of East Victory Drive and Bull Street in Savannah, GA. The officers stopped to question Oxendine. During questioning, Oxendine attacked one of the officers. Oxendine then attempted to attack the other officer, and the officer shot him, ending the attack. EMS was called to the scene, and Oxendine was taken to an area hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries. Both officers were also treated at an area hospital for minor injuries and later released.
Oxendine’s body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler, where an autopsy will be conducted.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
