ORIGINAL RELEASE:

DeKalb County, GA (June 8, 2026) - At the request of the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in DeKalb County, GA. One man was shot and injured during the incident. One officer was injured.

Preliminary information indicates that at about 8:18 a.m. on June 8, 2026, a DKPD officer noticed a man who appeared to be sleeping on the property of an unoccupied business in the 2900 block of North Decatur Road in Decatur, GA. During the interaction, the man refused to identify himself and reached for a sharp-edged weapon. The officer observed the man reaching for the weapon and attempted to detain the man. The man attacked the officer, knocking the officer to the ground. The man continued to attack the officer, stabbing the officer in the head and arm. The officer then shot the man. EMS was requested, and both the officer and the man were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The officer is in stable condition. The man is currently in critical condition.

The man has not been identified at this time.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
