Powder Springs, GA (March 4, 2026) - At the request of the Powder Springs Police Department (PSPD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Powder Springs, GA. Gustavo Guimaraes, age 34, of Acworth, GA, was shot and killed in the incident. No officers were injured. 

Preliminary information indicates on March 3, 2026, at about 9:00 p.m., PSPD officers were called to assist with a mental health-related call in the 3000 block of New MacLand Road in Powder Springs. When officers arrived, they made contact with Guimaraes. While the officers were engaging with Guimaraes, he pulled out a handgun. Officers then shot at Guimaraes, hitting him multiple times.

Guimaraes was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
