GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Savannah
Savannah, GA (February 22, 2026) – At the request of the Savannah Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Savannah, Georgia. Malik Hendrix, age 23, of Savannah, GA, was shot and injured in the incident. No officers were injured.
Preliminary information indicates that on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at about 2:45 p.m., Savannah Police Department officers were dispatched to an apartment on Emerald Drive following a 911 call. The caller reported a female was being chased from an apartment by a man. Hendrix’s name, as well as a physical description, was provided during the call.
When officers arrived, they determined that a domestic dispute had occurred between an adult female victim and Hendrix. Witnesses also reported allegations that a child had been thrown into a dumpster during the incident. Officers quickly located the victim, who had already been reunited with her child. The victim confirmed Hendrix’s identity and provided a photograph to assisting officers. The child was taken by emergency medical services to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.
Officers conducted an initial search for Hendrix but were unable to locate him at that time. As officers were concluding their on-scene investigation, Hendrix approached them and inquired whether they were looking for him. Officers observed that Hendrix had his right hand concealed inside his jacket near his chest and abdomen area.
Officers issued repeated verbal commands instructing Hendrix to show his hands. Hendrix did not comply. Hendrix then abruptly removed his right hand from his jacket and pointed it toward officers while holding an object. Three officers shot at Hendrix, hitting him multiple times.
A K9 unit was simultaneously released and apprehended Hendrix, causing additional injuries. Officers gave Hendrix medical aid until EMS arrived. Hendrix was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
It was later determined that the object Hendrix pointed at officers was a cellphone.
This investigation is active and ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be given to the Eastern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
