GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Gwinnett County

Gwinnett County, GA (February 19, 2026) - At the request of the Gwinnett County Police Department (GCPD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Gwinnett County, GA. Nawras Mahmud, age 31, of Lawrenceville, GA, was shot and killed in the incident. No officers were injured.

Preliminary information indicates on February 19, 2026, at about 3:45 p.m., a 911 caller reported that someone was trying to stab them inside of their home and that the individual was still armed with a knife. Two GCPD officers then responded to the home which was located in the 600 block of Oaktree Park Court in Lawrenceville. As officers approached the doorway, Mahmud exited the front door holding a knife. Mahmud began moving toward the officer with the knife. Officers gave Mahmud multiple verbal commands to drop the knife. Mahmud continued to advance toward one of the officers while still holding the knife. Officers then shot at Mahmud multiple times.

Officers provided medical aid to Mahmud. Mahmud was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
