GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Chamblee
Chamblee, GA (January 16, 2026) - At the request of the Chamblee Police Department (CPD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Chamblee, GA. Travis Damonta Harris, age 29, was shot and killed in the incident. No officers were injured.
Preliminary information indicates that on January 15, 2026, at about 3:45 p.m., a CPD officer was working in an off-duty capacity at a Walmart located at 1871 Chamblee Tucker Road in Chamblee, GA, when they were alerted by Walmart Loss Prevention of a shoplifter inside of the store. The officer and additional CPD officers made contact with the shoplifter, later identified as Harris. CPD Officers attempted to detain Harris but he started to fight the officers. Harris, who was armed with a gun, shot once during the fight, but the round did not hit any officers. Harris was eventually able to flee the Walmart and ran across the street toward an apartment complex. Officers made contact again with Harris in the parking lot of the complex. Officers gave Harris verbal commands to drop the gun. Harris did not comply and proceeded to walk toward one of the officers with the gun still in his hand. Officers fired multiple rounds at Harris, hitting him.
Officers gave medical aid to Harris but the man was later pronounced dead on the scene by EMS.
Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
