GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta
Atlanta, GA (January 15, 2026) - At the request of the Atlanta Police Department (APD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta. Antonio Wooten, age 37, of Atlanta, GA, was injured during the incident. Wooten was not shot during the incident. No officers were injured.
Preliminary information indicates that on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at about 9:50 a.m., an APD officer was working security at a warming center operated by the City of Atlanta located in the 400 block of Merrit Ave NE. The officer saw two people arguing. During the incident, one of the individuals, later identified as Wooten, took out a handgun and shot the victim. The APD officer fired their firearm at Wooten. Wooten was not shot, but fell to the ground. Wooten was then taken into custody.
A bystander unrelated to the incident was also struck by gunfire.
Wooten, the victim, and the bystander were all taken to Grady Hospital for their injuries. Wooten was treated for a broken arm.
APD is working the shooting investigation. The GBI was requested to investigate the officer involved shooting.
Once the investigation is complete, the case will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
