Fulton County, GA (April 24, 2025) - At the request of the Fulton County Police Department (FCPD), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Fulton County, GA. Damario Smith, age 24, of Atlanta, GA, was killed during the incident. No officers were injured. 

Preliminary information indicates that FCPD received a call about suspicious persons near the 3500 block of Martin Luther King Drive in Atlanta. When officers arrived at the location, several people took off running. Officers chased one man, later identified as Smith, who ran across the street and ultimately to his car. Officers gave Smith commands, which Smith did not comply with. Smith got into his car and pulled a handgun. Officers shot at Smith, hitting him. A weapon was located in his possession. 

Smith was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review
