Athens, GA (January 14, 2025) - At the request of the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Athens, GA. Javious Mattox, age 25, of Athens, GA, was shot and injured in the incident. No officers were injured. 


Preliminary information indicates at around 2:30 p.m., a person made a 911 call about a robbery at a Cricket Wireless Store in Athens. Athens Clarke-County Police (ACCPD) responded to the scene and a car chase began in pursuit of the robbery suspects. CCSO joined in the pursuit and after the car left the roadway, two men ran away, one with a weapon. Police and deputies ran after the men near the intersection of Newton Bridge Road and Commerce Road in Athens. While they were running, police saw a weapon on Mattox. One CCSO deputy fired, hitting Mattox. 

Mattox was taken to a local hospital with non-life threating injuries. 

The GBI will continue to conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Western Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.
