The man who died in the officer involved shooting in Atlanta, GA on May 11, 2024, has been identified as Claudy Pierre Jules, age 41, of Maryland. We encourage any family or relatives of Jules to contact the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Atlanta at 770-388-5019.

ORIGINAL RELEASE: 

Atlanta, GA (May 12, 2024) – At the request of the Atlanta Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. An Atlanta man died in the incident. Multiple Atlanta Police officers were injured in this incident. 

The preliminary information indicates on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at about 5:15 p.m., Atlanta Police Department officers were dispatched to Genessee Avenue and Fairbanks Street SW in reference to a man pointing a gun. Officers encountered the man with the handgun near the intersection of Desoto Avenue and Genessee Ave.  As officers approached the man, he pulled out a handgun. One of the officers tackled the man and wrestled him to the ground. While on the ground, what sounded like a gunshot could be heard. The man was subsequently shot by APD officers. Three of the responding officers sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and were taken to a local hospital. EMS personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene.  

GBI agents recovered the man’s handgun at the scene.   

The man was taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Agents are working to notify next of kin of the man’s death. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
