DeKalb County, GA (May 8, 2024) – At the request of the DeKalb County Police Department, GBI agents are investigating an officer involved shooting in DeKalb County, GA. Delano Gaynor, age 28, of Lithonia, GA, was shot and injured in the incident. No officers were injured in this incident.  

Preliminary information indicates on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at about 9:30 a.m., DeKalb County Police Department detectives were in the 2000 block of Evans Mill Road searching for a robbery suspect. Gaynor was seen walking through the parking lot at this location. As detectives attempted to make contact with Gaynor, Gaynor took out a firearm and pointed it towards the detectives. The detectives fired their weapons, hitting Gaynor. Gaynor ran away from detectives before surrendering near the entrance of a shopping center. Responding officers helped secure Gaynor and render aid until EMS arrived on scene.  

Gaynor was taken to an area hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and is currently in stable condition. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review.
