GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Douglas County

Roman is still being treated at the hospital, in stable condition.
Roman has been charged with the following:
- Malice Murder
- Felony Murder
- Aggravated Assault (x4)
- Possession of firearm during commission of a felony (x4)
ORIGINAL RELEASE:
Douglas County, GA (October 25, 2023) - The GBI is conducting an officer involved shooting investigation in Douglasville, Douglas County, Georgia. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on October 25, 2023. Before deputies arrived, one man was shot. During the incident, a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy and a man was shot and injured.
Preliminary information indicates on October 25, 2023, at around 9:30 a.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about a person shot in the 2900 block of North Bear Drive, Douglasville, GA. The shooter was still at the location. Deputies arrived on scene, and while identifying themselves and giving commands, entered the home.
Police found a man, later identified as Walter Jackson Johnson Sr, age 66, shot and laying on the kitchen floor. Johnson died on scene. Deputies saw a woman holding a baby, who indicated the shooter, later identified as Jonathon Christian Roman, age 27, of Douglasville, GA, was in another room. Deputies then saw Roman and continued to give commands of “show me your hands.” Roman shot a deputy and retreated briefly before emerging and shooting at the deputy again who was on the ground. Deputies returned fire, hitting Roman.
Roman was life flighted to Grady Hospital, where he is being treated and is in stable condition.
The deputy was shot multiple times. He was taken to a hospital where he is in stable condition.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office for review.
