ORIGINAL RELEASE:

Brookhaven, GA (November 1, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Brookhaven, Georgia. The Dunwoody Police Department asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on November 1, 2023. One man was shot and is in stable condition. No officers were injured in this incident.

The preliminary information indicates that at about 7:00 a.m., Dunwoody Police Department officers responded to a call about a stolen car located at a gas station on Ashford-Dunwoody Road near Perimeter Mall. As officers attempted to inspect the stolen car in the parking lot of the gas station, the driver of the car drove away from the location, hitting the officers’ patrol cars.  Officers pursued the car south into Brookhaven. The stolen car became disabled during the pursuit and the driver (a man) ran away from the officers. While the man was running away, he fired a handgun and officers returned fire, hitting him several times. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
