Peach County, GA (October 11, 2023) – The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Peach County, GA. The Peach County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at about 2:50 p.m. One man died. No deputies were injured.

The preliminary investigation indicates at about 2:38 p.m., Peach County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Honda Accord EX on State University Drive, Fort Valley, Peach County, Georgia for a traffic violation. The driver, later identified as Caleb D. Hooten, age 22, of Warner Robins, GA, refused to stop and there was a vehicle pursuit. After a brief pursuit, Hooten stopped and got out of his Honda Accord EX at Marvin Garden Apartments, Edwards Street in Fort Valley. Hooten ran into the woods directly behind the apartment complex. Deputies ran into woods and Hooten pulled out a gun. A deputy fired his gun, hitting Hooten. EMS personnel took Hooten to a local hospital in Macon where he was pronounced dead.

The GBI will continue an independent investigation. Once complete, it will be given to the Peach County District Attorney’s Office for review.
