GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Lawrenceville, GA

The man that died in this incident has been identified as John Michael Cicalo Jr., age 33, of Dacula, GA. 

ORIGINAL RELEASE:

Lawrenceville, GA (October 3, 2023) - The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Lawrenceville, GA.  One man died in the incident. No officers were injured.   

Preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at about 3:00 a.m., Lawrenceville Police Department officers were conducting a traffic stop on Highway 120 near Pike Park Drive when the driver of a black Kia Sorento sped pass them. The driver made a U-turn and drove back towards the officers. The driver abandoned his vehicle and attempted to steal the officers police cruiser. The officers gave the driver verbal commands to comply and ultimately shot and killed the driver.   

The driver will be identified after police make next of kin notification.   

The GBI investigation is active and ongoing. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
