Columbus, Muscogee County, GA (September 22, 2023) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. The Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on September 22, 2023.  One man, identified as Oscar Alfonso Maxwell, age 22, was shot and killed.  No officers were injured in this incident. 

The preliminary information indicates that on Friday, September 22, 2023, at approximately 9:00 p.m., the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office was attempting to serve an arrest warrant on Oscar Maxwell, at the Baymont Inn & Suites, located at 5585 Whitesville Road, Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia.  As deputies were approaching Maxwell’s hotel room, they encountered Maxwell as he left the room.  Maxwell observed deputies and returned to his hotel room.  Maxwell fired several times at the deputies, deputies returned fire, striking Maxwell.  Maxwell was pronounced dead on the scene. 

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Maxwell.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
