The man who died in this incident has been identified as Duterval Sejour, age 36.
 

ORIGINAL RELEASE:

Augusta, GA (July 9, 2023) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Augusta, Georgia. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on July 8, 2023. One man was shot and killed. One Richmond County Sheriff’s deputy was injured in this incident. 

The preliminary information indicates that on Saturday, July 8, 2023, Richmond County deputies responded to an area near 12th and Ellis Streets in Augusta about a man with a gun. Deputies learned that the man had been pointing the gun at people in the area earlier that day. Deputies found the man in an enclosed area of a business that bordered Ellis Street. Deputies confirmed that the man had a gun. While speaking with him in an attempt to get him to surrender, there was an exchange of gunfire between the deputies and the man. The man was shot and died at the scene. The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office is attempting to notify the man’s family about his death.  Until then, the man’s name will not be released.  

During the incident, a Richmond County deputy was also shot and taken to a local hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.

This is the 50th officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023.
