Atlanta, GA (August 21, 2022) - The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Atlanta Police Department (APD) asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on August 20, 2022.  One man was injured and taken to a local hospital.  No officers were injured.

Preliminary information indicates around 6:40 p.m., officers with the Atlanta Police Department were near 294 Northside Drive when they observed two men engage in possible criminal activity at the Texaco gas station. When the men left the location, officers attempted to make contact, but both ran.

Officers located the men, and when getting out of their patrol car, noticed that one man, identified as Keyuntae Whitaker, age 18, of Jonesboro, had a gun in his hand.  Both men ran through the Village at Castleberry Hills apartment complex and officers continued to run after them.  Officers repeatedly gave commands to “drop the gun.”  Whitaker attempted to jump over a fence with the gun in hand, continuing to ignore the officers’ commands.  The officer fired his weapon and hit Whitaker.  Whitaker was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
