Canton, GA (March 16, 2022) –  The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Canton, Georgia. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office asked the GBI to conduct an independent investigation on March 15, 2022. A man was shot and died during an encounter with Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office deputies. No deputies were injured.

The preliminary information indicates that on Tuesday, March 15, 2022, at 12:57 p.m., Cherokee 911 Center received a 911 call regarding a domestic incident that occurred near Pintail Court, Canton, Georgia earlier in the day. Based on the information obtained about the domestic incident, deputies began to attempt to locate the man that threatened the occupants of the Pintail Court residence.   

During the search for the man, deputies arrived at a location off Lawson Drive in Canton, Georgia. When they arrived, deputies located the man, identified as Jason Peterson, age 47, of Canton, GA, armed with a rifle. Ultimately, the man was shot and died at the scene. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
