Atlanta, GA (August 30, 2021) – On Sunday, August 29, 2021, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting. Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 5:34 a.m., an APD officer was flagged down by a citizen regarding a man armed with a metal pipe walking around hitting passing cars with the pipe.

It was determined that the man struck another citizen on Peachtree Street in Midtown with the pipe and smashed his cellphone, causing non-life-threatening injuries to the citizen. At some point, the officer made contact with the man, who was still holding the pipe. The officer gave numerous verbal commands to the man but he continued to advance toward the officer. The officer discharged his taser, which did not stop the man from advancing with the pipe. The officer discharged his firearm, striking the man. The man was transported to a local area hospital where he is being treated for his injuries. A pipe was recovered from the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Upon completion, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
