GBI Investigates Death in Metter

Metter, GA (June 19, 2020) - The GBI is releasing an update on a murder investigation out of Candler County, GA that occurred on June 15, 2020. At the request of the Metter Police Department, the GBI initiated an investigation for the murder of Willie Cheley IV. As a result of the investigation, the GBI secured a felony murder arrest warrant for Juan Dwayne Johnson, age 23. Investigators believe that he has left the area and may be traveling in a 2007 gray Honda Accord, license plate RUT5084. The vehicle was stolen shortly after the murder in close proximity to the incident scene. Anyone that sees the vehicle should call 911 and use caution as Johnson could still be armed with a weapon. GBI Makes Arrest in Statutory Rape Investigation in Cook County

Adel, GA (June 18, 2020) – On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, Sean Baxter, 43, was arrested and charged with Statutory Rape and Child Molestation. On Monday, June 15, 2020, the GBI’s Douglas Regional Office received a request from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office to assist with an investigation of an allegation of statutory rape.

GBI Conducting Use of Force Investigation in Adel, GA 

Adel, GA (June 18, 2020) – On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the GBI’s Douglas Regional Office received a request from the Adel Police Department to conduct a use of force investigation.

Rabun County Man Arrested for the Sexual Exploitation of Children

Rabun Gap, GA (June 18, 2020) – On Wednesday, June 17, 2020, Rabun County resident Aaron Andrews, 37, was charged with three counts of Sexual Exploitation of Children (Possession of Child Pornography) by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC). GBI was assisted with the arrest of Andrews and with the search of his residence by the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office and the Clayton Police Department.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Newnan, GA

Newnan, GA (June 16, 2020) – On Monday, June 15, 2020, the GBI was requested by the Newnan Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 8:57 PM, a Georgia State Patrol Trooper radioed dispatch about being involved in a high-speed pursuit exceeding 100 mph of a male subject, later identified as Azavious Lavonta Echols, age 25, of Woodbury, GA, driving a motorcycle westbound on GA Highway 34 in Newnan, GA.  The driver of the motorcycle was identified as a black male, wearing a t-shirt with blonde dreadlocks.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Thomaston

Thomaston, GA (June 16, 2020) – On Monday, June 15, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Thomaston Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting.

Arrest Made in Dooly County Death Investigation - UPDATE

UPDATE:

Dooly County, GA (June 15, 2020) - The autopsy has been completed on the body of Robert Middleton Davis at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Macon, Georgia.  It was determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound and manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

Additional charges are being taken against Heath Register for burglary, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

ORIGINAL RELEASE:

Dooly County, GA (June 14, 2020) – On Saturday, June 13, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 13 Perry Office was requested by the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office to conduct a death investigation. Heath Thomas Register, 41, of Crisp County, GA, has been arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection to the death of Robert Middleton Davis.

GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Atlanta

Update #2 (June 13, 2020)

The GBI has obtained additional surveillance video from the Wendy's restaurant.  Agents have also reviewed video posted on social media.  These new videos indicate that during a physical struggle with officers, Brooks obtained one of the officer's Tasers and began to flee from the scene.  Officers pursued Brooks on foot and during the chase, Brooks turned and pointed the Taser at the officer.  The officer fired his weapon, striking Brooks. 

A copy of this video will be released to the public.

An earlier account of this incident was based on the officer's body cam which was knocked off during the physical struggle, preventing the capture of the entire shooting incident.

The GBI is continuing to conduct an independent investigation.  We are encouraging any witnesses to contact 1.800.597.TIPS (8477).

Update #1 (June 13, 2020)

The deceased subject has been identified as Rayshard Brooks, age 27, of Atlanta, GA.

Atlanta, GA (June 13, 2020) - On Friday, June 12, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting. 

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:33 pm, APD was dispatched to the Wendy’s located at 125 University Ave, Atlanta, GA. Officers were responding to a complaint of a male in a vehicle parked in the drive thru asleep, causing other customers to drive around the vehicle.

GBI Investigates Two Deaths in Social Circle, GA

June 12th Update (#3):

During the early morning hours of May 15, 2020, James Evans and Jaymie Whitlock were taken from a residence in Monroe, Georgia and were driven to Thurman Baccus Road in Social Circle, Georgia where they were shot to death. The investigation has led to the arrest of four subjects, one of whom was known to the victims.

Four subjects have been arrested:

Tommy Webb, Jr., 20, of Athens, for Murder, Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Party to a Crime (Murder), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime and Violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act

Antavius Teazia Wilcox, 23, of Savannah, for Murder, Felony Murder (2 cnts.), Aggravated Assault (2 cnts.), Party to a Crime (Murder), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime and Violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act (2 cnts.)

Omar Marsh, 26, of Gainesville, for Party to a Crime (Murder), Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act

Elicia Rivera, 36, of Gainesville, for Party to a Crime (Murder)

Additional charges are anticipated at time of indictment.

Wilcox is currently being held in the Chatham County jail for an unrelated April 2020 murder in Savannah. Webb, Marsh, and Rivera were booked into the Walton County Jail.

Throughout the course of this investigation, the GBI Region 11 Field Office and the Social Circle Police Department have received investigative assistance from the Alcovy Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, the GBI Gang Task Force, the GBI Region 10 Field Office, the GBI Georgia Cyber Crimes Center, the GBI Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit (CEACC), the FBI Safe Streets Task Force (Athens), the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, the Monroe Police Department, the Clayton County Police Department and the Savannah Police Department.

June 3rd Update (#2):

On June 1, 2020, Tommy Charles Webb, Jr., age 19, of Athens, GA was charged with murder.  He was in the Clarke Co. jail for a probation violation.  The investigation remains active and ongoing.

May 15th Update (#1): 

The victims have been identified as James Robert Evans, age 27 and Jaymie Whitlock, age 32

Social Circle, GA (May 15, 2020) – On Friday, May 15, 2020, the GBI was requested by the Social Circle Police Department to investigate two deaths in Social Circle, GA.

Preliminary information indicates that during the early morning hours of May 15th, Social Circle Police Officers responded to Thurman Baccus Road for a report of two individuals found on the road.  Upon arrival, officers discovered a male and a female both with apparent gunshot wounds.  Emergency Medical Services were summoned; however, both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. 

GBI Arrests Former Foster Parent for Sexual Abuse of Children

Chattahoochee Hills, GA (June 12, 2020) – On Wednesday, June 10, 2020, Johnny Lee Summers, age 55, was arrested on multiple charges by the North Myrtle Beach, SC Department of Public Safety.  Summers has been charged in Georgia with the following:

Two felony counts of rape

Two felony counts of aggravated child molestation

Three felony counts of child molestation

Two felony counts of cruelty to children

One felony count of enticing a child for indecent purposes

Two misdemeanor counts for battery family violence

Two misdemeanor counts of simple assault
