Atlanta, GA (April 25, 2020) – On Friday, April 24, 2020, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Atlanta Police Department (APD) to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 11:35 p.m., APD conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle with a drive-out tag in the 100 block of Boulevard NE. During the stop, the passenger, identified as Byron McNeal, 24, of Hoover, Alabama, exited the vehicle with a handgun. An officer fired his weapon during the incident, striking McNeal. Officers rendered medical aid at the scene. McNeal was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he is in stable condition.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. When completed, the case will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
