GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Lawrenceville, GA
Lawrenceville, GA (January 15, 2020) – On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, the GBI was requested by the Lawrenceville Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.
Preliminary information indicates at approximately 5:27 pm, a Lawrenceville PD officer responded to a trespass call at the Wendy’s located at 165 Scenic Hwy, Lawrenceville, GA. After arriving at the restaurant, the officer approached the trespasser. The subject, identified as Albert Lee Hughes, age 47, started attacking the officer with a chair from the restaurant. Hughes continued to attack the officer, causing the officer to fall to the floor. The officer discharged his Taser in an attempt to stop the attack. The Taser was not effective. Hughes continued to attack the officer with the chair while the officer was on the ground. During the encounter, the officer fired his service weapon, striking him. Hughes was transported to a local hospital where he later died. The officer was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and was treated and discharged.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation of the officer involved shooting. Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office for review.
