Lagrange, GA (September 6, 2019) – On Thursday, September 5, 2019, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 2:49 p.m., Troup County 911 received an emergency call about a female victim, later identified as Sally Harrison, age 68, that had been shot at a residence on 5000 Riverside Lane, Lagrange, Georgia. Upon arrival, Troup County deputies and Lagrange police officers found Harrison deceased outside of the residence.   Information obtained from the investigation led police on a search for Harrison’s brother, Sam Burt, age 65.  Once Burt was located, police saw that he was in possession of a handgun.  Burt refused to comply with commands for him to drop his handgun.  Early information indicates that Burt raised his handgun towards police.  Police fired shots at Burt, striking him multiple times.  Police performed lifesaving measures on Burt, but he succumbed to his injuries on scene.

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies on both Harrison and Burt.

No officers were injured in this incident.   Two dogs died in this incident and one dog was injured.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be provided to Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
