GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Murray County
Murray County, GA (August 8, 2019) – On Thursday, August 8, 2019, the GBI Calhoun Office was requested by the Murray County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting. Deputies from the Murray County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Murray County after receiving information that Billy Williams, age 33, who had active warrants from neighboring jurisdictions, was present. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Williams located in a van in front of the residence. Upon seeing the law enforcement officers, Williams attempted to drive away in the van, nearly striking several of the deputies. A Murray County Sheriff’s Deputy discharged his firearm, striking the vehicle. Williams was not stuck but the vehicle he was attempting to flee in was disabled and ran off the roadway. Williams fled on foot from the vehicle and was subsequently taken into custody by Murray County deputies. Williams injured his leg after fleeing from the vehicle.
Williams was charged with Aggravated Assault on Police Officers and Possession of a Controlled Substance and was taken to the Murray County Jail.
No officers were injured during the incident.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Murray County District Attorney’s Office for review.
