Savannah, Georgia (December 9, 2018) – On Sunday, December 9, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Savannah Police Department and Georgia State Patrol (GSP) to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred at America’s Best Value Inn motel at the 4000 block of Ogeechee Road, in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia.

Preliminary information indicates that Savannah PD and GSP Troopers responded to a shooting call at the motel whereby a female had been fatally shot near the lobby of the motel. After law enforcement officers arrived, they were told by witnesses that the subject in the shooting was in a nearby room at the same motel. The officers responded to the room and engaged the subject who was, according to witnesses, armed with a handgun. A handgun was found at the subject’s location.  Multiple shots were fired by Savannah officers and GSP Troopers during which time Joshua Boyd of Garden City, GA, age 24, was shot and died at the scene.

No officers were injured during the incident.

An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Savannah.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office for review.
