Forsyth County, GA (September 13, 2018) – On Thursday, September 13, 2018, at approximately 1:15 a.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office (FCSO) to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.

Preliminary investigation revealed that FCSO responded to a report of two individuals shooting in the street in the 3000 block of Grand Prix Street in Cumming, Forsyth County, GA around 10:36 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12, 2018. Upon arrival, deputies arrested one of the neighbors involved in the incident. The other neighbor involved in the shooting was identified as Garrett Finley Mitchell, 31, residing at 3875 Grand Prix Street, Cumming, GA. Deputies attempted to make contact with Mitchell at his residence. Mitchell exited the door brandishing a shotgun and refused deputies' repeated commands to exit the residence. The FCSO SWAT team was deployed to assist in the safe apprehension of Mitchell. During the standoff, Mitchell exited the residence holding a pistol in one hand and a shotgun in the other hand. Mitchell ignored repeated commands to place the firearms down and surrender. Mitchell approached deputies at one point and pointed his shotgun at the deputies. Four deputies fired their weapons at Mitchell, striking him multiple times. Mitchell was provided medical aid at the scene by deputies and was transported to Wellstar North Fulton Hospital in Roswell, GA, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mitchell's body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur, GA where an autopsy was performed. No deputies were injured in the incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Bell-Forsyth District Attorney for review.
