Fulton County, GA (September 12, 2018) –  On Tuesday, September 11, 2018, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to investigate an inmate death that occurred immediately after a use of force incident.  The subject, identified as Antonio May of Macon, GA, age 32, who was an inmate at the Fulton County jail became combative and failed to comply with jail staff. A confrontation ensued. May was tased and pepper spray was used. Jail staff was able to gain control of May.  May was decontaminated due to the use of pepper spray. He later became unresponsive. Jail staff and medical staff conducted CPR. Grady EMS and the Atlanta Fire Department were dispatched to the scene and attempted life saving measures. May was pronounced deceased on the scene.

May had been arrested on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 for criminal trespass and a warrant from another county. The Fulton County Medical Examiner will conduct the autopsy.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
