Stone Mountain, GA (June 20, 2018) - On Tuesday, June 19, 2018, the GBI was requested by the DeKalb County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 3:15 p.m., the DeKalb County Police Department responded to a potential home invasion at The Reserve at Stone Creek apartment complex on South Hairston Road, in Stone Mountain, Georgia.  Officers located the subject, and during the initial contact, an officer fired at the subject. The subject fled and DeKalb SWAT was called to assist with locating the subject.  After an exhaustive search, the apartment that the subject was hiding in was located.  Officers attempted to negotiate with the subject to surrender and he did not surrender.  DeKalb officers then discharged tear gas into the apartment.  The subject subsequently exited the apartment and confronted officers with a firearm.  During the encounter, officers discharged their weapons striking the subject.  The subject was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries. The subject has been identified as Jonathan Buckley, age 20.

An officer sustained an injury from a bullet fragment. The officer was treated at the scene. 

The GBI will continue its independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for review.
