Monroe, GA (June 12, 2018) –  On Tuesday, June 12, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) to investigate an officer involved shooting that resulted in the death of Chavius Hollis, age 26.

Preliminary information indicates that at 11:08 AM, Walton County deputies received a 911 call from 3775 Lovers Lane, Monroe, GA reporting a disturbance by a family member with a gun.  He was also reportedly exhibiting erratic behavior.  When deputies arrived, a family member and multiple deputies entered the home.  The family member was present in an attempt to calm Hollis down.  During the encounter, Hollis raised his gun, discharging the firearm and striking the family member.  Subsequently, one deputy fired shots, striking Hollis.  He died at the scene.  A GBI Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on Hollis in Decatur, GA.

Hollis’ family member sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and is being treated for his injuries.  He is expected to recover. 

No officers were injured during this incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Walton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
