LaGrange, GA (June 6, 2018) – On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Troup County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 2:12 a.m., Troup County Sheriff’s deputies, along with LaGrange Police officers, responded to a 911 call from a man, later identified as Roger Sims, 56, claiming he had shot and killed his wife at 167 Lower Big Springs Road in LaGrange, GA.

Upon arrival at the location, officers made contact with Sims who was observed standing in front of the residence with a handgun in each hand.  Officers gave numerous verbal commands to drop the weapons.  Sims discharged both handguns into the ground and then put one of the handguns to his head. Officers attempted to negotiate with Sims; however, while speaking with him, he discharged a handgun at officers. Sims sustained multiple gunshot wounds by officers.  Sims was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured during this incident.

Subsequently, agents discovered Sims’ wife died last year in a rollover tractor trailer accident in Tennessee. Sims’ wife was the passenger and Roger Sims was the driver.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once complete, it will be turned over to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
