Temple, GA – On Monday, March 5, 2018, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at approximately 10:38 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call regarding a suspicious person with a gun located at 61 Lakeview Drive in Temple. Upon arrival, deputies were informed that the subject, later identified as David Willoughby, 33, was armed with either a shotgun or rifle. 

Deputies located Willoughby in the woods between houses in the neighborhood.  Deputies reported that Willoughby pointed a rifle at them and did not drop his weapon after being given verbal commands. Deputies fired their weapons, striking Willoughby.  His firearm was later examined and found to be a pellet rifle.

Willoughby was transported to Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica where he later died. An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation.  Once completed, the case will be turned over to the Coweta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
