Monticello, GA – On Monday, December 4, 2017, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Preliminary information indicates that at 11:21 AM, a 911 call was made from a female complainant who stated that while walking on Grandview Road in Jasper County, she was approached by a male subject who pointed a firearm at her. Jasper County Deputies responded and while investigating the complaint they heard multiple gunshots coming from a residence in the 600 block of Grandview Road.  At the house, deputies made contact with the subject who was identified as Jeffrey Scott Cantrell, 46.  Cantrell made statements to the officers that they would have to kill him.  During the incident, gunfire was exchanged between Cantrell and the deputies.  Cantrell died at the scene. No officers were injured.

Further investigation found that prior to the incident, Cantrell had contacted a family member and talked about committing suicide.

An autopsy will be performed at the GBI Crime Lab in Decatur.

When completed, the case will be turned over to the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
