GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Chatham County
Savannah, GA – On Saturday, November 11, 2017, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene of an officer involved shooting at the request of the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
Preliminary information from law enforcement agencies indicates that on Friday, November 10th at approximately 11:40 PM, a GSP Trooper attempted to affect a traffic stop on a white Nissan Altima in Chatham County, Georgia. The Altima failed to stop and a chase ensued. The Altima and the GSP Trooper wrecked at the on ramp to Veteran’s Memorial Parkway from Chatham Parkway. The driver of the Altima exited the vehicle, facing the trooper, with a firearm. During the confrontation, the driver of the vehicle was shot by the trooper. GSP and Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Officers rendered aid until EMS responded for medical treatment and transported the driver to Memorial University Medical Center where here is listed in critical condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Eastern District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
