May 24, 2017

Marietta, Georgia – On Tuesday, May 23, 2017, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested by the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) to conduct an officer-involved shooting investigation.

Preliminary information from Cobb County authorities indicates that at approximately 5:10 p.m., the Kennesaw Police Department received an anonymous call reporting that Devonte Williams, 18, was wanted for armed robbery.  The caller provided Williams’ location and a description of the vehicle he was in.  Based on the call, a Kennesaw Police Department officer located the described vehicle.  CCPD officers also responded and initiated a vehicle stop at the intersection of Bells Ferry Road and Highway 41.  The vehicle stopped in a business parking lot where Williams exited the vehicle with a firearm. Williams and CCPD officers exchanged gunfire.  Williams sustained a gunshot wound during the incident.  Williams was taken to WellStar Kennestone Regional Medical Center in Marietta for treatment where he is listed in critical condition.  Williams has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault on a peace officer.

Two CCPD officers involved in the shooting were also taken to the hospital for minor injuries and have been released.

The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident.  When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Cobb County District Attorney's Office for review.
