GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Hampton, GA
Hampton, Georgia – On Tuesday, December 13, 2016, the Henry County Police Department requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) investigate an officer involved shooting in Hampton.
Preliminary information provided by Henry County authorities indicates that the Hampton Police Department received a 911 call at 9:37 a.m., in reference to a domestic disturbance at a business near 26 E. Main Street. Officers from the Hampton Police Department (HPD) and the Henry County Police Department (HCPD) responded to the call. A male subject had confronted his former wife at her place of employment.
Officers made contact with both parties on Cherry Street located behind the business. The male subject was combative and non-compliant with officers’ commands. The male subject was tasered by a Hampton Police Department officer and during the confrontation, the male subject displayed a handgun. The subject was shot once by a Henry County Police Department officer.
The subject was transported to Piedmont Henry Hospital where he later died. Family notifications are still being made at this time.
No officers were injured in the incident.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Henry County District Attorney's Office for review.
