GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in East Point, GA
East Point, Georgia – On Friday, November 11, 2016, at approximately 4:30 AM, the East Point Police Department (EPPD) requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to investigate an officer involved shooting in East Point, Georgia.
Preliminary information provided by East Point authorities indicates that between 3:00 and 3:30 AM, officers responded to a 911 call of a reported domestic disturbance at the Legends at Laura Creek Apartments in East Point, GA. Upon the officers’ arrival, the second party to the domestic disturbance had left the area. A description of the subject was provided to the officers. Additional 911 callers reported to EPPD a suspicious person matching the description of the second party to the domestic disturbance. A short time later, officers encountered the subject matching the description and approached the subject. The male subject fled on foot and an EPPD officer made contact with him in an upper level landing of the apartment building. The subject attacked the officer and another officer tasered the subject. One officer fired multiple shots, striking the subject. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Both responding officers were transported to local area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
The GBI will continue its independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office for review.
