GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Clayton County

May 17, 2016

Riverdale, Georgia –  On Monday May 16, 2016, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Clayton County Police Department to investigate an officer involved shooting that occurred as a result of a response to a 911 call of a domestic dispute in the 1500 block of Cheryl Leigh Drive in Riverdale, Georgia.

Preliminary information indicates that on Monday May 16, 2016, at approximately 5:12 pm, Clayton County Police was dispatched to a domestic disturbance at a residence on Cheryl Leigh Drive in Riverdale. The disturbance was described as an altercation between Jabril Robinson, age 23, and a reported girlfriend, whose name is not available for release.

Clayton County Police arrived at the residence and met with the complainant.  Robinson was not at the residence, so one of the responding officers began searching the area for him. The officer located Robinson and a foot pursuit ensued. Robinson attempted to break into a residence but was unsuccessful as the homeowner would not let him enter. Robinson continued to flee and was observed to be armed with a handgun.  Officers encountered Robinson in the yard of a residence in the 6400 block of West Fayetteville Road in Riverdale where shots were fired. Robinson was struck multiple times by the officers’ gunfire and was transported to an area hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. None of the officers were injured in the incident.

The GBI Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on Tuesday May 17, 2016.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney for judicial review.
