On Monday, March 14, 2016, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was requested to assist in an officer involved shooting in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA. At approximately 2:50 PM, Fort Oglethorpe Police Department officers were responding to a shoplifting call at the Fort Oglethorpe Walmart on Battlefield Parkway. A lookout was given for a blue Toyota Camry with no direction of travel. At about 2:54 PM, the vehicle was located and a traffic stop initiated. One suspect fled the vehicle on foot and the officer gave chase. A second officer stayed with the vehicle. The subject’s vehicle attempted to leave the scene driving in the direction of that officer into a crowded roadway. At that point, the officer fired one time. The vehicle was followed and two subjects were taken into custody in a nearby Office Depot parking lot. The third subject was taken into custody near Battlewood Apartments.
No one was injured during the incident. The shoplifting case is under investigation by Ft. Oglethorpe PD.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Catoosa County District Attorney's Office for judicial review.
