Conyers, Georgia – On Sunday February 21, 2016, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called to investigate a Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved shooting.  The incident began as a response to a burglary in progress call at about 9:00 AM this morning.

Preliminary information indicates that Rockdale Sheriff’s deputies were responding to a burglary in progress call in the 800 block of Cambridge Creek Drive in Conyers.  A Rockdale Sheriff’s deputy observed a car matching the description of the burglary suspect’s car.  The deputy attempted to make a traffic stop but was unsuccessful as the vehicle and its occupants fled.  As a result, Rockdale Sheriff’s Deputies initiated a pursuit.  The fleeing vehicle slowed down while in Lockniver Subdivision at which point two of the occupants exited the car and fled.  The vehicle pursuit continued into a subdivision on Amber Brook Drive in Conyers.  The deputies boxed in the vehicle forcing it to stop.  The vehicle continued moving around striking one of the deputies and knocking him to the ground.  As a result, the other deputies on scene fired into the car.  The vehicle was able to escape and continued to flee.  The pursuit continued into Lithonia and ended on Chupp Way as Rockdale County deputies reportedly performed the PIT maneuver, immobilizing the vehicle.  The two occupants were apprehended and appeared to have been shot as a result of the earlier encounter.  The two individuals were transported to area hospitals where they are being treated for nonlife threatening injuries.  The deputy who was struck by the car was treated and released on scene.  The two individuals who fled in Lockniver Subdivision remain at large.  Rockdale Sheriff’s Deputies are actively searching for them.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the Rockdale County District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
