Officer Involved Shooting in Decatur County
Bainbridge, GA - On Wednesday, September 30, 2015, the GBI’s Thomasville Office was requested by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an independent investigation into a shooting in Decatur County. On the same date, deputies with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office responded to 162 Azalea Circle regarding a reported suicide threat. Evan Wayne Lashley, 25, who resided at the location had made the threatening statement in an earlier phone call to friends.
Upon arrival, officers made attempts to de-escalate the situation with Lashley through negotiation; however, Lashley declined all offers for assistance. During the incident, Lashley displayed a shotgun. One deputy fired his service weapon during the incident. Lashley surrendered to the deputies and was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital for examination and evaluation. The GBI is currently conducting interviews with witnesses and reviewing body-cameras worn by the Decatur County Deputies.
Lashley will be charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and Theft by Taking.
Upon completion, the GBI case will be turned over to the South Georgia Circuit District Attorney's Office for any action the District Attorney deems appropriate.
The officer involved in the incident has been reassigned to administrative duties per the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office policy.
